Introduction

This webpage is intended to give a brief introduction to potential religious and moral interpretations of Walt Disney's animated film Alice in Wonderland and the more recent Tim Burton re-imagining.

The 1951 animated film shows Alice as a young girl who travels to Wonderland.  As she progresses through the story, we observe Alice's interactions with the inhabitants of Wonderland and her new environment.  This film follows Lewis Carroll's original story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland fairly closely with some elements of Through the Looking Glass dispersed throughout.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland film (released by Disney in 2010) shows Alice's return to Wonderland (or "Underland" as it is named in the film)5 as a young adult.  This film is more focused on Alice's journey from being a passive, confused girl trying to please everyone to becoming an assertive young woman who decides her own destiny.
