Current Science Units

Our Scientific Studies for the months of...

December 2021 - January 2022

THIRD GRADE students will continue exploring the wonders of the world around them as we begin learning about Forces and Motion. This is a very interactive hands-on unit. We are rolling and catching balls, making them go faster and slower, also changing the direction. Forces help us do all of that and more. We will look at balanced and unbalanced forces as well as predict patterns. We will also take a closer look at the forces of magnets and how they can be used in transportation.

Practice the unit vocabulary with Quizlet (or vocabulario en Espanol).

Students should check Google Classroom for educational videos and Brainpop on our unit of study.

FOURTH GRADE students will be learning about different forms of Energy and how it can be transformed from one form to another. We will also look at electricity, how it is produced and its impact on the environment. We will build simple circuits and understand the difference between a circuit in series and a circuit in parallel.

Practice the unit vocabulary: Quizlet: Energy & Electricity (or vocabulario en Espanol).

Check Google Classroom for educational videos and Brainpop on our unit of study.

FIFTH GRADE students will be learning about Matter. We will conduct a variety of experiments as we change states of matter, and to realize that matter is made of particles too small to be seen, and to better understand the conservation of Matter in terms of Mass.

Practice the unit vocabulary with Quizlet (or vocabulario en Espanol).

A collection of educational videos from Crash Course for Kids, Fun Science Demos, SciShow Kids, and Brainpop have been linked in Google Classroom. Encourage your child to sign in and check them out regularly.

Science is about DISCOVERY through OBSERVATIONS and asking questions (INQUIRY). It is also about finding EVIDENCE and explaining your understanding (REASONING).

Engineers try to DESIGN solutions to help solve PROBLEMS. First they BRAINSTORM possible solutions to the problem while also identifying any constraints, limitations, and prior solutions. Next they make a PLAN for their DESIGN. Collaboration (working with others) is important! Then they BUILD and TEST their design. Engineers look for ways to IMPROVE their designs.

Have you OBSERVED anything new today? Have you tried to solve any PROBLEMS?
