I just turned 64 and have been sober for over 35 years. I have really been quite healthy in that time, with an occasional problem but no chronic conditions, in fact nothing that lasted for long. I play lawn bowls from September to April and do a lot of walking, mostly just using my car to go to meetings and to play Scrabble in three other towns three days a week. I actually feel about as good as I ever have.
The biggest problem was that my weight crept up over to years to the point where it became a serious health issue and I had to do something about it. That was mostly to keep doing what I so to stay sober, maintain a good level of sanity and change my eating habits so that I can eat three pretty sensible meals a day without too many calories and try to avoid eating anything in between. The hardest part was giving up the dish of ice cream I was having after supper. I seemed to have to do that for quite a while before getting results in terms of weight loss but that happened eventually and I have been able to maintain a weight about 30 kg less than it had been before I moved here six years ago for a few years now. I see my doctor at least once a year, try to be honest with him and try to do what he tells me, as well as seeing the denist a couple times a year. The doctor says I should be good for about another 30 years and that's fine with me. |
