Word & Sound Creative Writing Contests are open to writers across the globe and judged by prominent writers (TBA) in the area of expertise. Winners selected/notified: September 30. Winnings disbursed: December 30. Prizes: $100, $75, $50, $25 with external sponsorship otherwise $50, $40, $30, and $20 for first place, second place, third place, and honorable mention awarded at judges’ discretion. Entries must be original work and neither be a previous contest winner nor previously published. Submit Cover Page, Titled Entry, Short Biography (50-75 words of most interesting aspects of writer’s creativity or most important points of writer’s life), and Self-Addressed-Stamped-Envelope (SASE) with a Check/Money Order in the appropriate amount payable to AAF, c/o Contest Coordinator, Post Office Box 5464, Columbus, MS 39704-5464.
SECTION 1 - POETRY CONTEST
Reading Donation: $3 per poem ($10 for up to 4 entries)
SUBJECTS (any style): (1.) Aging Gracefully (or Not). (2.) Animals, Pets. (3.) Childhood Memories (including False Memories). (4.) Children, Youth. (5.) Death & Dying. (6.) Earth, Nature, Seasons. (7.) Family (including honor to a deceased relative). (8.) Friendship, Courtship. (9.) Holidays. (10.) Jobs, Employment, Unemployment, Underemployment. (11.) Love, Togetherness, Marriage (or Betrayal, Breaking Up, Divorce). (12.) Patriotism, Politics, Government. (13.) Spiritual, Uplifting, Religious. (14.) Witty, Whimsical, Humorous, Satirical. (15.) All other subjects.
GUIDELINES: Submit a Cover Page, Titled Entry, Biography, SASE, and Entry Donation c/o Poetry Contest Coordinator.
· Submit up to one original Poem (60-lines maximum) in all 15 categories/areas, typed/computer generated, single-spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 inch white sheets with one-inch margins and no other markings. Each poem may only be entered in one category. Include line count at end. (NOTE: The first page of each poem contains the Category Number and Category Name in the upper left corner.)
· Cover Page contains (1.) Name of Contest in upper left corner; (2.) author’s Full Name, complete Mailing Address with Zip Code, Area Code & Telephone/Cell Number, and Email Address in upper right corner; and (3.) Category Number, Category Name, and Poem Title centered (or numbered and flush left, if more than one).
SECTION 2 - ESSAY CONTEST
Reading Donation: $4 per essay ($10 for up to 3 entries)
GUIDELINES: Submit a Cover Page, Titled Entry, Biography, SASE, and Entry Donation c/o Essay Contest Coordinator.
· Submit up to 3 original Opinionated Essays on any subject (1,200 words maximum), typed/computer generated, double-spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 inch white sheets with one-inch margins and no other markings. Include word count at end.
· Cover Page contains (1.) Name of Contest in the upper left corner; (2.) author’s Full Name, complete Mailing Address with Zip Code, Area Code & Telephone/Cell Number, and Email Address in the upper right corner; and (3.) Essay Title centered (or numbered and flush left, if more than one).
SECTION 3 – SHORT SHORT STORY CONTEST
Reading Donation: $5 per story ($10 for up to 3 entries)

Reading Donation: $6 per story ($15 for up to 3 entries)

· Submit up to 3 original Short Stories on any subject (1,500 words minimum), typed/computer generated, double-spaced on 8-1/2 x 11 inch white sheets with one-inch margins and no other markings. Include word count at end.
· Cover Page contains (1.) Name of Contest in upper left corner; (2.) author’s Full Name, complete Mailing Address with Zip Code, Area Code & Telephone/Cell Number, and Email Address in upper right corner; and (3.) Short Story Title centered (or numbered and flush left, if more than one).
NOTE:
Entries in 2 or more contests may be separated by a smaller envelope and packaged in one larger envelope; only one SASE is required.
Short Bio may be included at the bottom of the Cover Sheet. Entries are recycled after judging.
There must be at least 10 valid entries in each category for categorical judging else poems are judged with like subjects or altogether.

about the Albert Anthony Foundation (AAF)
Founded to honor Albert Anthony (1880-1959), the Mississippi born and bred farmer/entrepreneur, one of the wealthiest multiracial/multicultural land owners in his time who donated parcels of land and monetary funding to area schools and churches. In addition to his 5 daughters, 4 sons, and 14+ grandchildren (not all of which were born upon his death) who have perpetuated the Anthony Family, AAF was developed to commemorate his existence and salute his philanthropy. The mission of the Albert Anthony Foundation for Cultural Arts, Grants, & Scholarships is “Supporting mentorship endeavors that promote an equitable and sustainable society; expanding the horizons of cultural artistry through awareness, determination, drive, and opportunity; catering to the untapped, unharnessed cultural energy of disadvantaged and at-risk individuals/families; transforming the culturally void community into a cultural arts Mecca; and exposing its general public to limitless cultural possibilities.”
about Liberty R. O. Daniels
Liberty R. O. Daniels is the founding editor of P.O.E.T.S. Newsletter, immediate past editor of the Southeast Michigan Chapter of the National Writers Union (SEM-NWU) quarterly newsletter (SEMantics) and the Southeast Michigan Chapter of the International Women’s Writing Guild (SEM-IWWG) quarterly newsletter, past editor of the Austin Minority Health Network (AMHN) newsletter, and past Contest Coordinator for the Poetry Society of Michigan 2004-2007. She is one of the seven granddaughters of Albert Anthony and incorporated the foundation.
CORRECTION:
Previous hard copy material suggested that there were two Section 2 categories. There are 4 (four) categories however entries submitted according to previously distributed material will not be penalized. Information concerning sponsorship of awards will be disseminated as it is received.
