I know you have all been waiting very patiently but excitedly for the announcement of The International – Albany Tennis Club Acts of Kindness, Sportsmanship and Goodwill Awards. Well, here they are - Awarded men’s ties: Larry Yakubowski, Steve Beditz, Rick Lubin, John Salamida, Bruce McBride, Chris Hall, Mike Klarsfeld, Bill Sewell, Ray Koloski and Tom Spagnoletti.
Awarded ladies' scarves: Marylee Trudeau, Paulina Klarsfeld, Cynthia Paulding, Millie Grossberg, Ava Charne, Maggie McDonald, Pat Sgarlata, Sarah Wellen, Georgette Furey and Diana Westbrook.
These people were nominated for their courtesy and good sportsmanship on the courts and for the volunteer work they have performed for the Club. Thank you to all the winners and to all the members who have been good sports on and off the courts. Thank you to Professor Young Ki Kim.

Ladies' Singles Event

The Albany Tennis Club hosted a ladies' singles event on Sunday. We had eight eager participants. In one semifinal, Ava Charne bested Paulina Klarsfeld, 3 – 1. In the other semifinal - the most exciting match of the day - Nancy Kutner bested Susan Dautel in a tie breaker, 3 – 2. It was Nancy Kutner over Ava Charne in the finals by a score of 3 – 1. Thank you to all who participated in the doubles events we had in July and the singles events we had in August. I enjoyed them and I hope of the participants did as well.

Tri County Tennis Tournament

This coming Labor Day weekend the Albany Tennis Club will be hosting the Annual Tri County Tennis Tournament. Players from Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady County, New York State and surrounding states will gather to show off their abilities on our courts. Larry and I are asking for your assistance to help out at the Tournament by being sweepers and doing other odd tasks. If you can volunteer to work a 2 hour shift – from 9-11am, 11am-1pm, 1-3pm, 3-5pm, and 5-7pm on Sat or Sun and from 9-11am and 11am-1pm on Labor Day – let me know.

In case you hadn’t heard the deadline for entering the Tri County Tennis Tournament is Tuesday, September 1st.

Maintenance

I have to apply calcium chloride to the courts in preparation for the tournament this weekend. After noon each day, I will be taking one court out of service for the rest of the day. If I only do one per day it should not impact your matches.

New Bench

The new bench was donated by the sons of C. Gilbert “Gib” Moore in their father’s memory. It is a very handsome bench and we will enjoy it for many years to come.

Attendants

As of Tuesday, September 1st there will no longer be attendants at the courts in the evenings. Players can still sign up for Community Tennis but Larry or I most likely won’t be there to moderate. Hit with Ed will continue but I would appreciate if you would sign up for the program in advance. And don’t worry, I’ll stop by before closing to lock things up for the night.

Some repeats for those who may have missed them –
1) Be sure to lock your bike up. If you do not have a lock please bring it in and put it in the back by the shed.
2) The locker room / bathroom is locked at 7:30 pm each night. It is unwise to leave your clothing or valuables in the locker room.
3) Please remember to put the umbrellas down when you are finished playing. Put the umbrellas down if the wind picks up while you are playing.
4) Sometimes as a result of rain we have courts unavailable. But the sun comes out and we all want to play. We like to have as many players enjoy their tennis as possible. Doubles matches can accommodate twice as many players as a singles match. So there may come a time if there are some courts out of commission and you are playing singles that you might be asked by the attendant to share your court with two other players to play doubles.
5) Members are asked to submit any guest fees and/or guest passes before playing. Your compliance with this would be appreciated.
Thank you for your understanding.
