Hello –
Second Annual Mayor Gerald Jennings Round Robin Tennis Tournament
The Sean – Part 2. We had lots of mixed doubles. In the morning Cara Zell and Len Sippel defeated Sandy Cummings and Al Kostanoski in one semifinal. Ava Charne and Phil Danaher defeated Nancy Kutner and Ray Koloski in the other semifinal. Ava and Phil defeated Cara and Len in the final in a tie breaker. Cara and Len played three tie breakers – one to win their bracket, one to win the semifinal and another in the final. In the other bracket Janine Robitaille and Lou Ieronimo defeated Marissa and John Owens in the semifinal. Kathleen Ryan and Paul Nabors defeated Lisa Frazzetta and Bruce McBride in the other semifinal. Janine and Lou defeated Kathleen and Paul in the finals.
In the men’s singles, Alan Chen defeated Korey McKoy in one semifinal and Rick Leva defeated Jose Gonzalez in the other semifinal. Rick defeated Alan in the final.
In the afternoon mixed doubles we had a rain shortened event. One bracket was won by Chris Finn and Ed White. The other bracket was won by Wendy Meola and Al Kostanoski. (I would have won because I was just getting warmed up when the rains came.)
We raised $3,538 with The Sean Tournament. $2,180 was tournament entry fees and $1,358 was donations. I thank everyone for participating and supporting this event. It meant a great deal to my family.
Quote of the Year
Dirty lines tell no lies. – A.C.
Community Tennis Lollapalooza
We had 24 players today for the last big event of the year – the Community Tennis Lollapalooza. Everyone braved the cold and winds and had a great time. Thanks for participating. Maybe we should do it once a month next year?
Final Statistics
Out of the 164 possible days, the Albany Tennis Club was open 151 days, 92%. We had 4,500+ people sign in and play tennis this summer.
Next Year
Does anyone have any comments for me regarding what the Club did very well this year? More importantly, I would like to know what the Club did not do well and we can improve upon.
I very much would like to see you all back as members next year. Thanks for the great summer.
Enjoy your tennis,
Ed

September 27, 2009Hello –
The weather has been especially fine,
The courts look as dark as red wine,
Plan on playing at least one more time,
The Albany Tennis Club is in its prime.
And then we scheduled The Sean
Saturday was exciting and not a yawn.
Finn, Dautel, Qua, Woerhl, Sippel, Gorthy
Proved themselves much more than worthy.
Sunday it rained and rained and rained
Oh when will it stop so I can get trained
For the second big day of the tournament
We’ll have to wait until the clouds have went
(gone doesn’t rhyme with ment – poetic license?) Second Annual Mayor Gerald D. Jennings Round Robin Tennis Tournament
The Second Annual Mayor Gerald Jennings Round Robin Tennis Tournament, aka the SAMGDJRRTT, also known as the Jerry, and also called The Sean was hosted by the Albany Tennis Club this past next weekend. Well, at least half of it was until the rains came. Sunday has been postponed until next Sunday, October 4th. In the morning the men’s doubles semifinal it was Al Qua and George Woerhl over Mike DeRossi and Pete Rinaldi. In the other semifinal it was David White and Seth Layton over Alan Chen and Ritesh Kotecha. In the finals it was Qua/Woerhl over White/Layton by a scored of 6-3 in a very exciting match. In the other men’s doubles event it was Mike Gorthy and Len Sippel over Garth Mashmann and Eric Wohlleber in a great match by a score of 6-4. In the ladies doubles event semifinal it was Sue Dautel and Chris Finn over Wendy Meola and Robin Pollitzer. In the other semifinal event it was Fonda Charne and Ava Charne over Lisa Brainard and Betsy Mercogliano. In the finals it was Dautel/Finn over Charne/Charne by a score of 6-1 which was a much closer and a more exciting match than the score appears. Next Sunday we will have the mixed doubles event and the men’s singles event. There is still time to enter if you are interested. I appreciate your support for this event.

The International Korean – Albany Tennis Club Acts of Kindness, Sportsmanship and Goodwill Awards
I know you have all been waiting very patiently but excitedly for the announcement of The International – Albany Tennis Club Acts of Kindness, Sportsmanship and Goodwill Awards. Well, here they are - Awarded men’s ties: Larry Yakubowski, Steve Beditz, Rick Lubin, John Salamida, Bruce McBride, Chris Hall, Mike Klarsfeld, Bill Sewell, Ray Koloski and Tom Spagnoletti.
Awarded ladies' scarves: Marylee Trudeau, Paulina Klarsfeld, Cynthia Paulding, Millie Grossberg, Ava Charne, Maggie McDonald, Pat Sgarlata, Sarah Wellen, Georgette Furey and Diana Westbrook.
These people were nominated for their courtesy and good sportsmanship on the courts and for the volunteer work they have performed for the Club. Thank you to all the winners and to all the members who have been good sports on and off the courts. Thank you to Professor Young Ki Kim.
Ladies' Singles Event
The Albany Tennis Club hosted a ladies' singles event on Sunday. We had eight eager participants. In one semifinal, Ava Charne bested Paulina Klarsfeld, 3 – 1. In the other semifinal - the most exciting match of the day - Nancy Kutner bested Susan Dautel in a tie breaker, 3 – 2. It was Nancy Kutner over Ava Charne in the finals by a score of 3 – 1. Thank you to all who participated in the doubles events we had in July and the singles events we had in August. I enjoyed them and I hope of the participants did as well.
Tri County Tennis Tournament
This coming Labor Day weekend the Albany Tennis Club will be hosting the Annual Tri County Tennis Tournament. Players from Albany, Rensselaer and Schenectady County, New York State and surrounding states will gather to show off their abilities on our courts. Larry and I are asking for your assistance to help out at the Tournament by being sweepers and doing other odd tasks. If you can volunteer to work a 2 hour shift – from 9-11am, 11am-1pm, 1-3pm, 3-5pm, and 5-7pm on Sat or Sun and from 9-11am and 11am-1pm on Labor Day – let me know.
In case you hadn’t heard the deadline for entering the Tri County Tennis Tournament is Tuesday, September 1st.
Maintenance
I have to apply calcium chloride to the courts in preparation for the tournament this weekend. After noon each day, I will be taking one court out of service for the rest of the day. If I only do one per day it should not impact your matches.
New Bench
The new bench was donated by the sons of C. Gilbert “Gib” Moore in their father’s memory. It is a very handsome bench and we will enjoy it for many years to come.
Attendants
As of Tuesday, September 1st there will no longer be attendants at the courts in the evenings. Players can still sign up for Community Tennis but Larry or I most likely won’t be there to moderate. Hit with Ed will continue but I would appreciate if you would sign up for the program in advance. And don’t worry, I’ll stop by before closing to lock things up for the night.
Some repeats for those who may have missed them –
1) Be sure to lock your bike up. If you do not have a lock please bring it in and put it in the back by the shed.
2) The locker room / bathroom is locked at 7:30 pm each night. It is unwise to leave your clothing or valuables in the locker room.
3) Please remember to put the umbrellas down when you are finished playing. Put the umbrellas down if the wind picks up while you are playing.
4) Sometimes as a result of rain we have courts unavailable. But the sun comes out and we all want to play. We like to have as many players enjoy their tennis as possible. Doubles matches can accommodate twice as many players as a singles match. So there may come a time if there are some courts out of commission and you are playing singles that you might be asked by the attendant to share your court with two other players to play doubles.
5) Members are asked to submit any guest fees and/or guest passes before playing. Your compliance with this would be appreciated.
Thank you for your understanding.
Weekly Schedule
- Monday Night Singles Night – at 5:30 pm

Acts of kindness and goodwill
A month ago I told you about an act of international goodwill that happened at the Albany Tennis Club. The visiting professor from Korea, Young Ki Kim, has reciprocated with presents for our members. He presented our ATC president, Bob Wood, with 10 silk ties and 10 women’s silk scarves on Sunday at Community Tennis. We want to pass them on to the members. Please nominate an ATC member by sending an e-mail to Bob at bobwood@nycap.rr.com. Your nomination can be based on any act of sportsmanship or friendliness or kindness that you have seen this year. Bob and I will decide the winners and distribute the presents as soon as possible. Deadline for nominations is Sunday, August 23rd. The Community Hospice left two cases of water behind after the fundraiser on Saturday. I put them on ice and the last of them were gone tonight. So the ATC bought three more cases and they will be on ice for you to cool off with. They will be gone in a few days. This is just my idea but if you have enjoyed the water wouldn’t you want to keep it going? If so, pick up a case of water and bring it in or give me a donation and I’ll take care of getting the water and the ice.
Community Tennis is the most popular program at the Club and the ATC will be providing the balls for the rest of the season. During CT players get a chance to meet and play with members they have not met before. Much comraderie and fun ensues. Why not join us?
In a few days I will have assembled a bench donated by the son of C. Gilbert “Gib” Moore by his sons in their father’s memory. It is a very handsome bench and we will enjoy it for many years to come.
With all this kindness and goodwill I am looking forward to being at the Club and seeing all the good feelings being passed around.
Some repeats for those who may have missed them last week –

The Albany Tennis Club will be having a ladies singles event on Sunday, August 23 at 1 pm. Each event will have an upper bracket and a lower bracket if there is sufficient participation. Free to members, $15 per play fee for non-members. E-mail me to register.
The Albany Tennis Club is offering an adult tennis camp August 24 through 29 from 1 to 4 pm. The instructor will be Tom Bain. The summer camp is a concentration of informative instruction and supervised play designed to transition a player quickly to the next level. The combination of instruction and play provides players a well rounded instructive atmosphere by which they can see improvement more rapidly. Our goal is to have lots of fun while encouraging the players to learn as much as possible. The cost is $150 for the 15 hours / 5 days of instruction. Let me know if you have any questions.
The Tri County Tournament is September 5 – 7. It attracts many players from within and outside the area. Brackets will be available for members to participate. Let Larry Y. know that you are interested in playing – lyakubowski@yahoo.com.

If you are free at 10:30/10:45ish on Tuesday, August 11th, please join us at the Club to thank our friendly City Youth Employees and wish them well – this is their last week at the Club. Cindy Paulding, caipirin@aol.com, will bring a fruit platter, plates, forks and napkins for all to share. If you care to bring something, feel free, but it is not necessary. On Saturday, August 8th, the Albany Tennis Club hosted a fundraiser to benefit the Community Hospice in memory of Stan Majerowski. It was a beautiful day for tennis. There were 16 participants in the ladies doubles bracket. Brooke Strauss defeated Nell Fodera and Kim Faniff in one semifinal and Cinderella Paulding defeated Kerry Strnad and Lynn Strnad in the other semifinal. In a very exciting final match Strauss and Robitaille defeated Paulding and Nakai. There were 12 participants in the men’s doubles bracket. Min Ho Lee and Young Ki Kim defeated George Schlottner and Bill Collins in one semifinal and Ernest Kovacs and Alan Chen defeated John Eaton and Bruce McBride in the other semifinal. In a great final match Chen and Kovacs defeated Lee and Kim, 6-3. There were 8 participants in the mixed doubles bracket. In a thrilling tie breaker Marylee Trudeau and Ofer Barpal defeated Nicole Fuller and Ray Koloski, 14 – 12. Thank you to all who participated.
Larry and I considered what kind of event would the members appreciate and enjoy and we hatched the idea of the member/guest events. With an increasing number of participants I think they were enjoyed by a significant number of the members. I am glad that you enjoyed them and the Club’s efforts were well spent. To continue the momentum we have developed we thought that two singles events would round things out. See below for the men’s and ladies’ singles event in August.

Albany Tennis Club – Where everyone knows your name!
This is reprinted from last year by request –
Ode from Court 8
Sarah, Elaine, Ann and Marge
15-love, 30-love, 40-love, it is fate
But no one has love for lonely Court 8
When was the last time we had a date?
Richard, Rick, Tony, Manuel, Ron, John, Larry and Bob
I’m out here spring, summer and fall
But no one comes or gives me a call
Try Court 8, you’ll have a ball.
Mary Lee, Pat, Jackie and Pat
I’m the wettest, muddiest of all
Big puddles from heavy rains that fall
I didn’t shrink, I’m not too small.
Mark and Steve, Dennis and Bob
I’ve been treated with calcium chloride
It makes me thirsty and cracks it does hide
You like singles, why not give me a ride?
Andrea and Michael, Sue and Don
Some mixed doubles on 8 before the snow?
It’s tournament time, that’s when I know
Someone will have to give me a go
Mel and Bob, Herb and Richard and guest Pete
The gentlemen who can not be beat
Carolyn and Don, Nancy and Ray
If you play on me you make my day
Glenn and Joe, Steve and Joe, man
Oh, do you have a beer, man?
Tony and David, Ray and Dave
Hey, with you, what’s the motta?
Alan and Jose, Bill, Bruce and Stew
They say one is the loneliest number
But not while Court 8 can only slumber
Look at Court 8 – it’s a beautiful umber.
Karol and Myrna, Bob and Mike, Asieh too
When it comes to maintenance I’m the last
Retrieve your mis-hit and retreat fast
Why not put other courts in your past?
Chris, where are you? Joseph and Dennis
Group Lesson $10 and Community Tennis
All the activities – am I just a menace?
Playing Court 8 isn’t a penance
Frank and Mimi, Diana and Pietro
Get the machine out and give me a roll
You must think that I am a great big troll
Please play on me, make it your goal.
Ester and Terry, Vickie and Ann
So gather your groups two by two
Do I play Tuesday or is it you?
We could play on 8 and now let’s follow through.
Tom and Paul, Bob and Darlene
Sometimes you get hurt and don’t come around
Rehabilitate the knees, shoulders and hit my ground
Please get better and come on “back” when you are sound.
Eileen, Mary, Claire and Iva
One hits the ball, the other hits back
I’m ugly and pitted and have many a crack
My weeds are huge, give the ball a whack.
Michael and Mike, Greg and John
Remember your summer loves of 2008?
If you had some memories of 8 it would be great
How about a Court 8 tennis date?
Sorry Howard and Mary, Jeff and Sue
If you would love me I would be true
Sure they play softball right next to me
Cover your head for a foul ball or three.
Craig and John, George and Kirby
Maybe you would like me if I wore a derby
We all like our doubles, some singles too
I have red topping and I’m missing you.
Before you go to places sunny
I’ll try to attract you with Court 8 honey
Come on back and give me a try
You’ll have more fun than money can buy.

On Sunday, July 26th, the Albany Tennis Club hosted the third of three member/guest events – ladies doubles. There were 20 participants, the most of the three events. It was nice and we played. Then it showered and we played. Then it stopped and we played some more. Then it rained some more and we played some more. The attendance and the playing through the rain certainly showed the spirit of ladies tennis at the Albany Tennis Club. Semifinalists were Nicole Fuller and Darlene Wood in one division and Cinderella Paulding and Sanami Nakai in the other division. In the Championship Match, Betsy Mecogliano and Ava Charne defeated Christine Finn and Lisa Larner by a score of 6-4 in a very exciting match.
Larry and I considered what kind of event would the members appreciate and we hatched the idea of the member/guest events. With an increasing number of participants at each subsequent event I think they were enjoyed by a significant number of the members. I am glad that you enjoyed them and the Club’s efforts were well spent. To continue the momentum we have developed we thought that two singles events would round things out. In the Championship Match, Sue Paul and Don Paul defeated Betsy Mercogliano and Tom McPheeters by a score of 8-4.
The Albany Tennis Club will be hosting a benefit in the memory of Stan Majerowski to benefit the Schenectady Hospice on August 8th at 12 noon. There will be events for singles, doubles and mixed doubles. E-mail me to register.

On Saturday, July 11th, the Albany Tennis Club hosted the Benefit for the Capital Region Action Against Breast Cancer (CRAAB). Over 30 people participated in the event and over $2,000 was raised to support the program. Margaret Roberts and I thank all who participated as well as all who donated towards the cause. In the finals of the event Martha and Tom Fashouer defeated Rebecca Bloom and Tom McPheeters in an exciting match.
Another good thing that happened is that through an act of international act of good will we now have a visiting professor from Korea as a member of the ATC. Welcome professor Young Ki Kim.
Some not so good things – we had a bicycle stolen from the rack out side the Club. Be sure to lock your bike up. If you do not have a lock, please bring your bicycle in and put it in the back by the shed. To avoid accidents, do not leave your bicycle near the courts.
The locker room / bathroom is locked at 7:30 pm each night. It is unwise to leave your clothing in the locker room. Kathleen finally got her clothes back but it took a while.
A couple of umbrellas were damaged this past week due to the wind. Please remember to put the umbrellas down when you are finished playing. Put the umbrellas down if the wind picks up while you are playing.

Thanks for participating in the Wimbledon Whites. It is good to see us all in white.
In the first member-guest event, men’s doubles, Jonathan Carp (guest) and Tom McPheeters (member) defeated Ernest Kovacs (guest) and David White (member) in the championship match. Thanks to all who participated (and missed the end of the Roddick – Federer match).
