Rape is an issue that needs serious attention, but it can be very difficult for rape survivors to talk about their experience and to get the help they need. Rape is sexual intercourse against someone's will using force, or threat of force. Rape is an act of aggression and occurs when one person is not consenting. People do not provoke rape because of their appearance, behaviour or reputation. No one has a right to have sex with another person because drinks, meals or car lifts have been accepted. No one deserves to be raped. The responsibility for rape rests entirely with the person who uses force. If the rape happened some months or some years ago, it may still be a major cause of distress. The fact that it is not recent does not make it less important for the survivor to get the help they need. Sometimes we bury things until we are able to bear looking at them, or until our feelings and memories well up and won't be buried any longer.
