  • safety valve: a valve in a container in which pressure can build up (as a steam boiler); it opens automatically when the pressure reaches a dangerous level
  • The relief valve (RV) is a type of valve used to control or limit the pressure in a system or vessel which can build up by a process upset, instrument or equipment failure, or fire.

Bedford OB. Duple.
Bedford OB. Duple.
(120) EFE 20110 Operator: Bere Regis Motor Services Ltd. Reg No: DJT 995. Route: Relief. Issued: Feb 1996. Bere Regis Motor Services Ltd. When Bere Regis Motor Services sold out in 1967, they ran 80 vehicles. On 29th October 1929, a 22 year old bus driver left his job, to start up his own bus business with a Ford Model T 14 seater, for which he had to borrow the money to purchase it. Over the years his business grew, and in the post-war era, it was the largest independant bus operator in Dorset. Bedford OB: The Bedford OB was introduced in the summer of 1939, as part of a completely new range of commercial vehicles. Based on the "O" truck. So named, after the type of operators / carriers licence that was required for that size of vehicle. The Duple coachwork Company carried out the bodywork. A wooden (Ash) frame, with steel reinforcents was used. A hardwood floor with softwood tongued and grooved boards were used, except in the cab are, where there was an alloy chequered plate. With the begining of the Second World War in September of that year, production was suspended. The chassis was 14'6". The handling of the OB was superior to any other similair coaches around, with excellent brakes and steering, it was stable in the wet or on slippery road surfaces. Gearchanging meant double de-clutching, which was common in those days for most commercial vehicles. Power was from a 6 cylinder overhead valve petrol engine introduced by Bedford in 1938. The 28 horspower unit had a capacity of 3519cc, which developed 72 bhp at 3000rpm. Generally, fully laden the top cruising speed was about 40mph, although 60mph was possible in the right conditions. Production was resumed in 1946, to a post-war specification, which took into account a shortage of some materials. The standard model was of 29 seats. Above the seats were overhead luggage racks, and a large boot at the rear for suitcases etc. The spare wheel was also stored in there. Despite fuel shortages and rationing, the period 1945 to 1950 was a boom time for the bus and coach industry, and the OB was a major player. Before the start of WW2, 73 OB's were built. From 1946 until 1950,a further 12,693 were built. In 2007 there were approximately 70 Ob's still on the road, some of them still earning a living with a PSV, some 60 years on.
