Torque Wrenches Calibration
torque wrenches
- A tool for setting and adjusting the tightness of nuts and bolts to a desired value
- A torque wrench is a tool used to precisely apply a specific torque to a fastener such as a nut or bolt. It is usually in the form of a socket wrench with special internal mechanisms. It was invented by Conrad Bahr in 1918 while working for the New York City Water Department.
- (TORQUE WRENCH) A wrench containing an adjustable mechanism for measuring and controlling the amount of torque or turning force to be exerted – often used to tighten nuts on high strength bolts.
- (torque wrench) a wrench that has a gauge that indicates the amount of torque being applied
calibration
- (calibrate) mark (the scale of a measuring instrument) so that it can be read in the desired units; "he calibrated the thermometer for the Celsius scale"
- Each of a set of graduations on an instrument
- the act of checking or adjusting (by comparison with a standard) the accuracy of a measuring instrument; "the thermometer needed calibration"
- The action or process of calibrating an instrument or experimental readings
- (calibrate) make fine adjustments or divide into marked intervals for optimal measuring; "calibrate an instrument"; "graduate a cylinder"

Decided to verify calibration on my 10 year old "clicker-style" torque wrench before entrusting it to the job. It's so simple, yet I deal with many who become confused by the meaning of torque: A 20 lb bag of floor dry hung one foot from the axis should click it when set to 20 ft.lbs. And indeed it did. If the bag moved even an inch forward, the wrench didn't click.
An airman is only as good as his tools
BAGHDAD -- An Iraqi airman takes notes on training wtih a torque wrench calibration system at New Al-Muthana Air Base, Feb. 2. U.S Airmen taught Iraqi airmen how to calibrate their own torque wrenches, saving them from sending their wrenches to the U.S. for calibration. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Levi Riendeau)
