A post office with character. Those of you who have looked at my photos, know that I have a deep soft spot in my heart for small towns. Best of luck Shaniko, Oregon. I'm not sure the tourist trade will carry you through, but I hope so. We lived in a small town when I was in my teens and my brother and I used to walk to a double story wooden post office in town, next to a big fish hatchery, and work the combination to get our mail, with boxes, very much like these. Because of a mnemonic poem we made up to remember the combination, I can still remember our post office box combo: E G B D I. Monday October 27th, 2008, my wife and I took a 13 hour loop route drive to the "painted hills" section of the Oregon's John Day fossil beds national monument. The painted hills were great (our 2nd visit) and the back roads route we took getting down there was an adventure of its own, with some great scenery along the way (Shaniko; the Deschutes Rier fishing platforms; Muddy and Burnt Ranch roads; etc.).
