San Juan Greenway crossing Shelbourne Today I cycled 10km from home to Glendenning Ave via San Juan Greenway. Say what you will . . . Saanich may have spent a fortune of taxpayers' dollars to upgrade the sidewalks on San Juan Avenue but none of it contibutes to the safety of cyclist using this route. San Juan Avenue has copious amounts of signs describing it as a preferred cycling route but few amenities to make it so. No bike lanes. Onstreet automobile parking. No Shelbourne Street cyclist crossing light. Pedestrian crossing light for westbound traffic only. Instead of including curbside laybys for automobile parking, Saanich chose to waste this valuable realestate to include more flowerbeds and grass. The annual maintenance cost to Saanich taxpayers on these ammenities must be mindboggling. Anyway, we enjoyed this beautiful, spring day. Every sports' field in Lambrick Park and Gordon Head School was in use either for baseball games or soccer matches. I've never seen these facilities used to this maximum capacity. It was so warm, I had most of my cycling gear off during the return trip. What a great day! San Juan Greenway Saainch sign
The San Juan Greenway is an east-west connector in Saanich Municipality which is a series of roads designated as the preferred route for hiking and cycling. No improvements nor bike lanes have been added to the route so other than small signs attached to lightposts, hikers and bikers are pretty much on their own. * Arbutus Cove Park forms the eastern terminus of the route.
