I was simply amazed when I saw my first submerged computer. The Reactor was created by www.Hardcorecomputer.com.
Then I made a few researches and found there was more informations about oil submerged computer at
But Why build one ?
I have to say that first it was kind of a challenge. I like computers as well as building them but buying an already made submerged computer (the Reactor) wasn't interesting and very expensive.
As beautiful as the reactor is, buying one would mean buying everything with Hardcorecomputer because everything is custom made just for the case.
And as most computer geek, I like the freedom to choose, change and upgrade parts of my computer as I want.
So I decided to study the tests made by Pugetsystems and the more I read about it the more I was interested by its potential.
I decided to try.
There were numerous advantages :
1. You can make any computer silent or nearly silent depending of your cooling needs.
2. Because of its excelent capacity to evenly spread the heat and absorb it, mineral oil makes the system very stable.
3. If your cooling system is well thought of, you can cool it in a way that your system lets you overclock it without any stability problem or over heating.
4. I was very surprised by the final result, even without trying to use the special cables (UV cables) or anything fancy... it still looks amazing.
5. ...
As you can see there are very good reasons to do it, but of course there are also few inconvenients.... :
1. It's mineral oil !!!! Once you submerge everything, it can be messy to change the submerged components. (Even if I designed a much simpler case to use than what Pugetsystems did)
So plan correctly and use only compoments that you test before and validate that they work properly.
2. You probably will void the warranty of the submerged hardware. So again be sure of what you put inside.
3. In the case of Pugetsystems, the space is limited, you can't fit everything inside. (Where do you put hardrives, DVD drives...?)
4. It's heavy.
My goal was to design a case that makes those inconvenients less of a problem :
The SS01 is build in 3 differents parts :
- The oil tank.
- The system holder.
- The cover.
By doing this I've made the installation much easier (as any normal computer), the change and modification of any components much simple, and a lot of space for everything, including harddrives...
