AIDS Action 2008

2007 Art Examples

A number of artists donated their work for exhibition in 2007 in recognition of World AIDS Day. Below are a few examples.

Artist: Jole Lyness

Title: Still Celebrating Life!

Artist statement: In an universal way, the oil painting represents both sexes of people with AIDS. In celebrating each day there is a certain air of dignity (thus the clouds). And although the painting depicts a bit of darkness, there is hope.

Artist: Vicki Miller

Title: Capitol Awaremess

Artist statement: Making a connection between societal stigma, and the reality of this disease, focusing on the strength, beauty, and livelihood of those living with HIV/AIDS, I hope to create a positive dialog about this very important issue. I lost my uncle to AIDS in 1992, and it is with great pleasure to be able to use my passion for art, to help she light to a subject very near and dear to
my heart.

 Artist: John Steines

Title: Lineage

Artist statement: The silence of the generations in the face of abuse, and the costs of speaking out against it, is the base of this work (figurative abstract).

Artist: Alex Thomas

Title: Madonna and Child

Statement: Madonna and Child is a mediation on my realization that there is an entire generation of children of third world nations born into a world of AIDS where the help they so desperately need exists, but is nowhere near them.  They suffer for the sins of others, and through them we may all find redemption.

Artist: Richard Brian

Title: John's Room

From the artist: I took this photo two years after I'd last slept in this bed with my partner in Sussex, England. It's certainly not the best photo I've taken, far from. I
take mainly florals that have sold for a good bit of
money; this wouldn't. And yet, somehow, it's more
important to me because of the subject, not the
artistic nature. It captures a moment I can't go back
to: the empty bed of my deceased partner in a house
where neither he nor, more recently, his friend lives.
