17(b) Trails, Sites, & Airstrips
- This data reflects trails, sites, and airstrips pursuant to section 17(b) of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The data was compiled from digitized trail information provided by BLM. A limited number of these trails were then GPS'd by Ahtna staff to improve accuracy. You can see pictures of some of these 17(b)s at our Trail Pictures page. Each trail, site, or airstrip has an associated EIN and description. The EIN is the BLM Easement Identification Number. The description is the allowable use on the trail per BLM. The descriptions in the data reflect the width or size of the trail, site, or airstrip. The allowable uses are more particularly described as:
- 25' Trail: Travel by foot, dogsled, animals, snowmobiles, two and three-wheel vehicles, and small all-terrain vehicles (less than 3,000 lbs Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)).
- 50' Trail: Travel by foot, dogsled, animals, snowmobiles, two and three-wheel vehicles, small and large all-terrain vehicles, track vehicles, and four-wheel drive vehicles.
- 60' Road: Travel by foot, dogsled, animals, snowmobiles, two and three-wheel vehicles, small and large all-terrain vehicles, track vehicles, four-wheel drive vehicles, automobiles, and trucks.
- One Acre Site: Vehicle parking (e.g., aircraft, boats, ATV's, snowmobiles, cars, trucks), temporary camping, and loading or unloading. Temporary camping, loading, or unloading shall be limited to 24 hours.
- These are milepost points along the major roads and highways in the Ahtna Region. The data mainly covers roads that cross Ahtna Lands. The data is based on information provided by the Alaska DOT as well as GPS of mileposts by Ahtna staff.
