by Matt Perry Staff Reporter _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ To many people, the creation of boards for a lawn game in which players take turns pitching beanbags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end of each decorated board may not seem like a traditional high school fundraiser. However, this year Atholton’s National Art Honor Society is allotting some of their time to the creation of cornhole boards to help the funding of the honor society’s activities. This year, eight cornhole boards were made by NAHS. Four of the boards were painted in Atholton green and white to show off students’ school spirit while the other four were painted in more artistic fashion. This fundraiser is supported by and run through Atholton Boosters and the boards will later be auctioned off at a Boosters event. “The Boosters Club is having a bull-roast at some point this year, and they had us create these cornhole boards to help raise money for the school,” said Mr. Titford. Cornhole is a game in which players take turns pitching beanbags at a raised platform containing a hole in the far end of each board. These players are allowed four tosses total and the goal is to hit part of the other team’s board or to sink their beanbags in a basket. A bag that happens to sink directly or fall into a hole is worth three points. The bag can be tossed directly into the hole, slide into the hole, or be knocked into the hole by another bag. A bag that lands on the board and is still on the board at the end of the inning is worth one point. A cornhole match is played until the first player or team reaches twenty-one points. Although cornhole can be challenging, it is a game players can get used to with practice. “I’m not a huge fan of cornhole actually,” Mr. Titford said jokingly. “It’s a little hard, but I heard it gets better with practice and time.” While the results of the fundraiser are not yet known, the NAHS is confident that enough revenue was generated to fund their coming activities. |
