Wrigley Field is a baseball field in Chicago, Il that is home to the Chicago Cubs major league team since 1916. It was also home to the Chicago Bears NFL team from 1921 to 1970. The stadium was originally built for the Chicago Whales baseball franchise of the Federal League, but after 2 years, the Federal League collasped and the Cubs moved into the stadium. It was originally called Weeghman Park for the first 2 years under the Whales, then Cubs Park from 1920-1926, and then Wrigley Field from 1926 to the present which was named after the Cubs owner William Wrigley. The stadium still has many features that make it unique to all other baseball stadiums. It has the iconic front sign that says Wrigley Field, Home of the Cubs. It also has ivy on the outfield wall that dates back to 1937 on the request of William Wrigley to give the baseball stadium a different look. It also still has the same scoreboard in outfield that has always been there. It is a manuel scoreboard that has someone who hangs the score through the holes in the board. The same family has done that for the last 3 generations. It also has seats on the rooftops of the buildings accross the street in outfield. People can purchase tickets from the different buildings and sit up there to watch the games. Wrigley field was set to be the first stadium to host night time baseball which use to be played in only the daytime. Wrigley ordered big lights to be placed at the stadium in 1942. But when WWII broke out, a close navy yard sent for his lights for night training in Northern Chicago. Wrigley Field became the last baseball stadium in the league to host night games in 1988. The only reason they added the lights is because the front office of Major League Baseball said that they could not host the playoffs without them. The Chicago Cubs have not won the World Series since 1908. This is the longest drought in professional baseball. Wrigley Field has hosted 5 World Series since it was built, but the Cubs lost all 5. The last World Series here was 1945 when the Cubs lost to the Detroit Tigers. Wrigley Field also served home to the Chicago Bears from 1920-1971 of the NFL. The new franchise which started in 1920, did not have a stadium so played here and stayed for almost 50 years. Wrigley Field saw the Bears bring home 8 NFL Championships. In 1970, the NFL merged with the AFL and new rules and field regulations were added. The football field played from the dugout on the firstbase side to the left field wall. Thee was 100 yards there but it only allowed 7 yards in both end zones instead of the new regulation of 10 yards. The league told them that to continue to play in the league, the must build a new stadium, so they built Soldier Field. Wrigley Field has been home to just the Cubs since then.

National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Donut Day event created by the Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I. The holiday celebrates the doughnut (a.k.a "donut") — an edible, torus-shaped piece of dough which is deep-fried and sweetened. Many American doughnut stores offer free doughnuts on National Doughnut Day. In 2009, both independent doughnut shops and large national franchises offered free doughnuts in the United States. National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers. Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that the needs of US enlisted men could be met by canteens/social centers termed "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service. Typically, six staff members per hut would include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys. These huts were established by the Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers. About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee." A legend has spread that the provision of doughnuts to US enlisted men in World War I is the origin of the term doughboy to describe US infantry, but the term was in use as early as the Mexican-American War of 1846-47.
