John Anderson was a notorious radical and Jacobin sympathiser who in 1791 invented a new type of cannon and presented it to the beleaguered Directory as his “Gift of Science to Liberty”. At the age of thirty Anderson had become Professor of Oriental Languages at Glasgow University, but his real vocation was the exciting new science of Natural Philosophy, and in 1760, at the age of 34, he become Glasgow’s professor of that subject. This was the same year in which he published “The Institutes of Physics”, a standard textbook for a hundred years. We no longer use the word “institutes” in his sense, but this book was probably the first publication is which the word “physics” was used in ours. On 13th January 1796 the old scientist died. He left instructions that his estate should be employed to realise a university of “useful learning” to provide practical and vocational education, and “Anderson’s Institution” was duly built. The organisation has had at least eight different ( official ) names. For over two hundred years it has habitually got called “The Andersonian Institution”: Never an officially-sanctioned appellation. Today the University of Strathclyde is Scotland’s leading scientific and technological research and teaching facility. Its patent royalty income topped ?30 million in 2003 and it supports more than forty “spin-out” companies, ranking it seventh amongst UK new firms generators, and possibly the dominant non-Russell institution. It is one of the UK’s six Fulbright Centers for US exchange students and Scotland’s third biggest university. Strathclyde University has 22000 degree students including a large cohort of postgraduate students from nearly every country. It is Britain’s biggest provider of taught master’s degrees and there were 2279 international MSc students at the last count, which does not include EU students or business or arts scholars. Furthermore, there are 34000 continuing education students and 3200 staff. There are 360 courses taught, 160 at postgraduate level. It is one of Glasgow’s largest employers. The campus now occupies most of the land between the Cathedral and George Square in the very center of the city. Amongst a galaxy of illustrious alumni are: The missionary, physician and explorer Dr David Livingstone; John Logie Baird, inventor of television and rubber socks; and of course our own Lapsus Kalamari!

Teachers College, Columbia University (sometimes referred to simply as Teachers College; also referred to as Teachers College of Columbia University or the Columbia University Graduate School of Education) is the top ranked graduate school of education in the United States. It was founded in 1887 by the philanthropist Grace Hoadley Dodge and philosopher Nicholas Murray Butler to provide a new kind of schooling for the teachers of the poor children of New York City, combining a humanitarian concern to help others with a scientific approach to human development. From its modest beginnings as a school to prepare home economists and manual art teachers for the children of the poor, the college affiliated with Columbia University in 1898, and went on to become the leading intellectual influence on the development of the American teaching profession. Under the terms of its affiliation with Columbia University, it is the University which actually awards all master's degrees, Ph.D., and Ed.D.degrees to graduates of Teachers College, as the College is Columbia University's Graduate School of Education.
