The
Health Connections: Aging Well Learning Network is a group of dedicated individuals working together to create opportunities for healthy
aging in Buncombe, Madison, Henderson and Transylvania Counties. The
goal of our network is to share information about health promotion
activities, programs and initiative that touch the lives of older
adults in this region. Together, we intend to (1) increase knowledge
and awareness of existing programs, (2) share resources, (3) reduce
program duplication, and (4) leverage funding for collaborative projects. For more information about the network, please contact
Rebecca Chaplin, Aging Program Specialist with the Area Agency on Aging
at rebecca@landofsky.org or call 828-251-7438.
November / December Spotlight Article - Getting Fresh at Vanderbilt Apartments
Richard Shuttleworth and a group of volunteers are making a difference at Vanderbilt Apartments. Richard is a senior companion volunteer with the Land-of-Sky Regional Council and resides at Vanderbilt Apartments in downtown Asheville. Due to his inspiration and collaboration, residents of Vanderbilt Apartments now have weekly access to fresh foods. Mountain Foods, a wholesale produce company brings a supply of fresh produce and other prepared items such as sandwiches to the Vanderbilt each week. This win-win collaboration supports our local business and attends to the unique needs of single, community dwelling older adults. Residents can buy food for one - such as a sandwich or a couple of stalks of celery. Thank you Richard, Vanderbilt Apartments and Fresh Quarter for making our community more livable and senior friendly. If you have questions about setting up a similar food market at your residence, Richard is happy to share some of his wisdom and experience you can contact Richard at 828-337-1563.
