20090131-vs-8584 Environmental education camp of Cabeco da Lenha - close to Pico Arieiro, Madeira Island, Portugal For many of you, the white landscape that results from snow may be a common sight. Not so for us islanders. After 3 years without snow, this weekend we had it for the third time this Winter. Only above 1600 m, and it does not last for long. But it's magical while it does. My "weekend office" is this environmental education camp that the ecological association I belong to owns in the neighbourhood of Pico Arieiro, one of the highest peaks of Madeira. This is our base from where we try to recover the former forest cover of the island's high lands, lost through fires and intensive grazing. Just to provide the extra touch, here is the cabin's old style salamander heater. After all, who cares about freezing cold when you have one and enough wood to burn? DSC 6300
6 ft x 24" x 20" aquarium with large chiller/heater (Aquanetics) and large pump ("little giant") and all plumbing. I built this as a stream cutaway when working in local schools. Had trout, crawdads, giant pacific salamanders etc. Great for keeping turtles or really anything hot old cold environment. No leaks. Equipment on the older side but hasn't been used that much as stored. Chiller alone was $900. Asking $500 Related topics: how to replace a water heater baseboard heater fins best engine block heater cheap electric water heater kerosene heater problems solar water heater evacuated tube honeywell fan heater honeywell oil filled heater white propane heaters |
