On Opening Day, the Nationals' future seemed bright, with Ryan Zimmerman anchoring a steadily improving franchise. Tonight, the Nationals wrapped up their final home game in yet another losing season -- better than last season (68 wins so far versus 57 last year), but still very far from respectability. And the signs are depressing. Team President Stan Kasten, master of the "Plan," has resigned and gives broad hints that he may go to another team. Management hints they may not sign Adam Dunn, the second best (and second most entertaining) player on the team). Serious talk is given to having Nyjer Morgan, who had perhaps the worst season I've ever seen a major league player have, return to play center field next year. The Nationals have defined themselves as lovable losers with the revolting "President's Race," where mascots dressed up like George, Abe, Thomas, and Teddy Roosevelt stage fixed races in which Teddy always loses. It's supposed to be cute, with the "Let Teddy Win" signs -- but it really just symbolizes how comfortable the Nats have become with laughing when they lose. It may just be my mood this evening, but right now I'm leaning toward not renewing my season tickets if the Nats don't make a serious effort to sign Adam Dunn or it looks like they're going to put another sub-$100 million payroll team on the field. My patience, which I thought would be endless on that bright day when the Nats moved to DC, feels like it's running out after a night at the ballpark where Phillies fans dominated and the Nats looked like they didn't much care. "Sign Adam Dunn!" -- or I might just find a lot more time next year for my coin collection. And stop acting like losing like Teddy always does is fun. It's not.
