Bournemouth have been struggling with their traditional open-top service 12 between Sandbanks and Christchurch for several years. For 2006 is was truncated to operate between Bournemouth station and Sandbanks only; for 2007 the full route was restored but at a much reduced frequency, which cannot have done anything to encourage custom; finally for 2008 operation was franchised to Classic Southdown Omnibuses Ltd, who ran a 20-minute frequency over the central section between Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers only. At the end of each year Bournemouth Transport said that the revised operation had been successful, but it wasn’t repeated the following year; and in 2009 no service ran at all. The section between Bournemouth and Christchurch was effectively resurrected this year, but as service 40 operated by Darts; whilst Discover Dorset Ltd ran an open-top route 12 between Bournemouth and Hengistbury Head as a City Sightseeing service. Back to 2008, and Classic Southdown Omnibuses’ no 902 (WTG 360T) at Boscombe Pier on service 12 on 25th July. This former Cardiff Bristol VRT / Alexander previously ran as an open-topper for the Bath Bus Co, and for Southern Vectis on the New Forest and Southampton Docks Tours.
