Students Participated in Presentation “How to apply to graduate programs in humanities, social sciences and communications/ journalism”. On February 03, 2011, David Mould, Fulbright scholar, the professor of media arts and studies at Ohio University met with students at Astana ACIE EducationUSA Advising Center. Mr. David Mould challenged the students to develop a habit of cooperation with their foreign peers. Mr. David told when students start their search of the universities it is important to know about reputation of the university. Student could have online conversations with current students of this university, read information on the web site and do search how many alumni of this university were successful in their professional career, how many world-known Professors teach in this university and take in to consideration other important things. Second – Student has to think about the Program and get as much information about particular university and Department as he/she can. It is useful to check the last date of updating of the web site of the university, because student has to get current information. If information is not updated then better to communicate with admission office representatives. Student has to know the length of the program and take into consideration financial circumstance. Cost issue is one of the basic feature. And in general the East part is more expensive then the West part of the USA. Middle location universities could be affordable for average students. Student has to seek safe place, where accommodation is affordable too. Mr. David Mould encouraged students to participate in cultural activities of the community where students will study and live. Mr. David Mould then underlined admission criteria. Letter of Recommendation – students have to pay more attention to this part of Application packet. Letter of Recommendation needs to reflect character, personality, motivation of the student, how this student distinguish himself by doing something and not only documenting student’s achievements. Letter of Recommendation should reflect student’s intellectual curiosity, research skills etc. If student has to write Biographical Statement it is needed to write how student’s personal life’s experience has motivated student to go to the master program, and find in student’s life experience links with the prospective field of study. As for the Statement of Purpose – Student has to clear express why he/she has to do master degree, to show in details how this degree will improve his/her academically and professionally. This Master Degree will be the Building Block in their career. Student has to know the deadline for international Applicants often are earlier then for domestic students. It could be two deadlines – one for international students and the other one – for domestic students. Also it is good to be aware about location of the university – big or small city, the West or the East part of the USA etc. Mr. David Mould told about the importance of studying abroad and mentioned study in the USA could be life-transforming experiences. He challenged the students to build strong relationships abroad. Students asked questions and got detailed answers from expert.
