The International Biological Program (IBP), active from 1967 to 1973 can be considered the precursor of the International Association of Aerobiology. Within the framework of IBP William Benninghof conceived and launched the Aerobiology Program. Benninghoff's activity culminated in 1974 when the International Association for Aerobiology was founded under the auspices of the International Union of Biological Sciences.
