    AEDers,

We are off to an amazing start. Our 1st meeting was a big success and we hope to see everyone come back.

All Cougar Scalpel issues are now also posted on the AED website. www.aed.uh.eduTrivia questions from now on will primarily come from the previous meeting's Cougar Scalpel issue. That's right, we want to reward you for being an informed pre-med student!

  • Ben Taub carpooling: Thursday, February 4th, 5pm
    Dear AEDers,

We will be providing a carpool to the Ben Taub orientation for volunteering tomorrow. If you have yet to turn in your application, bring it with you.
Just a reminder, though I doubt this applies to anyone. You must pass a background check and TB test before you can volunteer, no exceptions.

The actual orientation is from 6-7pm if you want to go by yourself, but we will be carpooling from UH.
For carpooling meet at the office (inside the Science Building) at 5pm, we will be leaving at 5:25pm. Be on time.

If you can provide your car for carpooling please email me. I will take care of the parking, I just need drivers and seats.

If you can not make this orientation there will be another on Thursday March 4th with all the same times and procedures.
If you want to wait until this date, please turn in your application asap to the AED office or directly to Liz Tise, the volunteer coordinator, so you can have your background check done before orientation.

Here is a map to Ben Taub:

    Hope to see you tomorrow

  • 1st Meeting Wrap-UP (01-29-2010)
    AEDers,

We would first like to say that last night's meeting was a huge success! Great turn out and great speakers!  I hope all of us who attended got a lot out of it. We look forward to having both Dr. Williams and Dr. Sutton visit us again, and we thank them again for spending their time to come and speak with us. This is looking to be a great semester for AED and we have a lot of great upcoming events and programs planned, so stay tuned.

    2nd meeting -
Thurs. Feb. 11 at 6:00 pm
Dr. Williams will attend the second meeting on Thurs. Feb. 11 at 6pm and talk more in depth about HPAC, discuss with us about our experiences with HPAC and the Pre-health advisors at the Academic Advising Center and answer any more questions we may have. We strongly recommend that all members getting ready to apply for medical school come to this meeting. The information from this meeting should prove to be invaluable.

Rockets Game - Sun. Jan. 31 starting at 6:00 pm
The game is scheduled for Jan. 31 starting at 6:00 pm. We now have a couple more tickets available. Please contact us if you would like to have one of these tickets. There is however now no way to hand you your ticket until the day of the game. We will meet in front of Old Science building starting around 5:00 pm and leave at 5:25 pm sharp. Also respond to this email to let us know if you would like to carpool. Otherwise transportation and parking will be left up to each individual person, but again, there should be plenty of $5 parking around.
    See you all there!

    Bake Sale- Thurs. Feb 4th from 9am - 4pm
AED will be having its first bake sale next week from 9am - 4pm on Feb. 4th. You can donate bake-sale items and/or volunteer some of your time at the table. Bake-sale items include individually wrapped baked goods to be sold for $0.50, canned Coca-Cola products, bottled Dasani water, hot dogs, hot dog buns or chips for nachos. If you intend to help out, please contact us and let us know what items you will donate and/or if you would like to work at the tables for any number of the one hour shifts from 9am - 4pm. People working at the tables, please try to wear your AED t-shirts. Bakesales also act as recruiting events. It simply looks a lot better if everyone is wearing them. UH requires anyone handling food prepared at the bakesale table to wear a hat or hairnet. Please bring with you a hat/hairnet just in case you are asked to prepare the hotdogs or nachos.

Like we mentioned in the meeting, all proceeds from the three bake-sales will go to a charity organization(s) of our choice at the end of the semester. Please suggest charity organization(s) for the proceeds to go to by contacting us.

We are also in need of bigger bake-sale equipment.
We no longer have our George Foremen Grill that we used to cook the hotdogs. If anyone has old but functioning BBQ equipment and utensils they no longer really use, donating them to AED would really help us out at the bakesales.

Pre-Health Paintball Social - Fri. Feb 5th from 1-5 pm
This next Friday ASDA, POPS and AED will all be meeting at the Paintball Zone from 1-5 pm to have some fun shooting each other. Please come and join us. Promises to be a lot of fun.

The Paintball Zone is located at 2811 Dixie Farm Road Houston, TX 77089 - map Cost of admission is only $25 and it includes 200 paint balls and all the gear needed. We are able to get a good discount since we are such a large group.

Carpool will be made available. Please contact us if you intend to go and/or if you want to carpool.

    Not receiving the AED Newsletter
If are reading this newsletter on the news section of the AED website, but have not received this email even though you signed up to the newsletter, it could simply mean we entered your email incorrectly on the listserv. Please email us if you want to be added to the newsletter with your name, email and whether you are a national member, associate or non-member. During last night's meeting, we starting having people sign in on the back of a Ben Taub volunteer sheet due to lack of space in the original sign-in sheet. Unfortunately, it seems someone took this sheet on accident. It had about 10-15 names on it, so if you are the one that accidentally took it, please return the paper during office hours or email us the names and their information. Everyone please tell anyone you know to contact us if they are not receiving this newsletter.

New Useful Links and Google Ads
We have added some new links to the website under the useful links section. They are highlighted yellow, including Dr. Sutton's MD initiation Program website and Dr. Williams info page on the UH website.

There is something we forgot to mention at the meeting. On the AED website there are Google ads sprinkled around in some pages. These ads are purposely placed on the website by us, and AED recieves money from Google for these ads. The revenue is dependent on people clicking on the ads, so, if you see an ad you are interested in, by all means click on it! Google ads are pretty safe, clean and legit, so you won't get sent off to a questionable website by clicking on them. This is an easy way for us to raise extra funds for AED. But don't spend all day clicking the ads either, since Google has mechanisms in place to negate this...but it is the thought that counts.
