- Do I need a partner to come to classes?
No, the classes rotate partners. Even if you do have a partner, you are strongly encouraged to dance with others in the class. This not for social reasons, but to better understand the lead/follow mechanics. Changing partners will significantly enhance your learning. - I am a total beginner. Can I come?
Mostly yes. You are welcome to the weekly ballroom and tango classes, ballroom workshops, and any practica. Most Argentine Tango workshops require basic knowledge of the dance (you do not necessarily have to have skills though.) - I'm not a student/postdoc, can I still come to classes?
Absolutely. We have faculty and staff among our members. Guests are welcome as well, however note that someone needs to sign you in if you are not AECOM affiliated. If you don't know anyone, just email one of us at least the day before the class; we'll arrange your signing in. - I'm old. Can I come?
Of course! - Where are the classes held?
Usually at Lubin. Back-up location is Glass Cafe. Click here for detailed location and directions. - Do I have to join the email list?
Yes! Class locations and times are subject to last minute changes. We also announce upcoming workshops and other events via email first (sometimes solely by email.) - How much does it cost?
Practicas: Free.
5 class series: $20 for students and postdocs, $30 everyone else
Intermediate Ballroom classes with Alexei: $10
Ballroom workshops with Yvonne & Niklas: $15 - What do I need to wear?
Everyone dresses casually to the classes. Snug fitting shoes are recommended for everyone. In Tango, there is considerable amount of pivoting involved, so leather/suede soles are recommended. Try to avoid sneakers (unless for guys if they don't have leather soled shoes), flipflops, clunky platform shoes, open-toed sandals, shoes without heel straps or (better) heel cups. - How is the gender balance in the classes?
Average 50%, but varies. - Why are the Argentine Tango events and Ballroom Dance events separate?
The philosophies are completely different. Most universities actually have separate student clubs for ballroom dances and for Argentine Tango. Our community is small, hence we are two clubs in one. - Do you compete? Do you perform on stage?
Tango: No!
Ballroom: Occasionally members participate in ballroom dance competitions in the region. - How "good" do I need to be to go out to social dancing?
Everyone starts to attend social dances when they are beginners, because one can hardly advance to intermediate/advanced levels without regularly practicing with many partners. Social dancing is an almost necessary step in your dance education, and perhaps more importantly, adds the fun to dancing. So, as long as you observe the etiquette of the particular social dance you attend to, be nice to and do not bother the other dancers on the floor, you shouldn't worry about your experience level.
