Dachau - Roll Call

This is a picture of men in Dachau concentration camp during the Second World War at roll call (photo of a photo). The uniform of shaven heads, striped 'pyjamas' and plain shirt was meant to reduce their individuality. The photo is taken from above to represent superiority. The men are looking down to show their inferiority, to appear cowed and beaten. I spent quite some time digesting the implications of this photo. I was studying Transactional Analysis earlier this year and for me, this photo is a striking example of 'I'm OK, you're not'. For those of you who haven't come across this before, there are 4 positions - I'm OK, you're OK ("healthy"); I'm OK, you're not OK (position of superiority, everyone else is inferior), I'm not OK, you're OK (position of inferiority, everyone else is better than you), I'm not OK, you're not OK (everybody sucks and what's the point?). We all have internal critics and it's interesting to become aware of what we tell ourselves. At it's worst, 'I'm not OK, you're OK' can result in suicide - the self is so devalued that it's not worthy of existence. This photo for me shows the opposite position of 'I'm OK, you're not' where other people are so reduced, dehumanised and stripped of their worth that mass murder is acceptable. Sad to think that this position is often driven by massive insecurity. One of the reasons we reduce others is to make ourselves feel more worthy.

Why is single synonymous with alone? Why is alone synonymous with lonely? Why is it so impossible to be happy and single these days? Today's society makes it much harder to be single than it has to be. I'm so sick of thinking about boys. I wish my mind had an off button. It'd be nice to just not think about things for a while.
