DETAILS.....  

This is the 3rd stage of this year's TDF.

  • Encanto Park to Mt Baldy Ski Lift
  • Beautiful mountain scenery
  • Fully supported. Mini-Lunch at summit.  PostRide Meal at finish line. 
  • 65 Miles round trip
  • 7,000 feet of accumulated climbing
  • No fee  (but voluntary donations accepted)
MASS START:  Encanto Park. Meet at 0700, Click and Roll at 0730 sharp

D-RIDERS are HIGHLY encouraged to volunteer instead, due to amount of climbing

REGISTRATION is now CLOSED as of 10-8-08

NEUTRAL ZONE (Easy pace / Peloton together / pace set by "C" riders Allan & Mandy) in first 7 miles.

  • Neutral zone ends at the base of Glendora Mtn Road.  Upon turning LEFT into GMR, you can go any pace you want.
  • If GMR is closed to cars (due to holiday), then SAG volunteers will be at the corner of Sierra Madre and GMR, so riders can refill bottles, pick up some energy bars, and gulp on lots of fluids, because the next 22 miles have no SAG cars  if GMR is closed.

REST STOPS, SAG CARS, SPOTTERS

  • Mile 15 – “kubo” (But if GMR is closed, no  Mini-SAG support will be there)
  • Mile 29 There's a small public park located 500 yards after trout pond.  There are public restrooms there 
  • Mile 33 –  Ski lift summit.  No public restrooms
  • Spotters will be at critical turns (but never at switchbacks), to prevent riders making a wrong turn
  • Roving SAG cars will be present. But if GMR is closed, then SAG cars will be limited to the roads AFTER the Mt Baldy Post Office

RETURN TRIP

  • Mass start for return trip (if possible)
  • The 3 mile downhill from the ski lift is TREACHEROUS, especially at switchbacks. Control your speed. Ride your brakes.
  • Spotters will be assigned at some critical turns ( not at switchbacks )
  • PostRide Meal Provided at the finish

SAFETY

  • Hazards for cyclists and drivers include narrow roads, steep downhills (especially returning from SKI LIFT), blind corners, motorcyclists, and inattentive car drivers

CYCLISTS SAFETY:

  • Follow all TRAFFIC RULES   ie: Stop at all Stop Signs
  • Cyclists: Helmets are mandatory.
  • Cyclists: On descents...  No racing/ No chasing. Control your speed.
  • Cyclists: Especially,  the 3 mile downhill from the ski lift is treacherous, so SLOW DOWN, "ride your brakes."

SAG CARS SAFETY:

  • Drivers: DON'T tailgate, DON'T drive beside cyclists
  • Drivers: DON'T stop in the middle of the road.  Find a shoulder with enough room off the road, and then pull over
  • Drivers: DON'T park at switchbacks.  Cyclists and cars cannot see you or stop in time

The Route....

The famous "snake" on GRR (Glendora Ridge Road, which is the 12 miles of rollers leading to the Mt Baldy Post Office from the top of GMR road.)

From the Mt. Baldy Post Office, here's what the road looks like.  Gorgeous.

At this junction, which is 1.8 miles after the Post Office, make a LEFT.  Now you are only 3 MILES from the Ski Lift finish line!
