Arden, Thanks for the nice and kind words. Yes we tried our best to make everyone happy. We will be discussing about your ride this coming October 24 and try to send a contingent to represent LUZVIMIN. Rest assured we will be flying our colors once again since we missed last year's. Since it's all climb, we will be sending our best climbers only, hahahaha! Rozel, Rick, Rannie, Ron, Winston, Mike M., Maui, Jonas, Justin, Romeo, Roberto Sto. Dominggo, Tom Alves, Jim Elam, Billy Huyn, Jeff Lancero... And maybe we can import Leian once again. Leian sound off ka diyan! Wala ka bang seminar dito sa California next month? The Adobo Velo ride is a true epic ride guys, it's 100 miles with 75% climb and about 15,000 ft of climbing. We can discuss this ride on the 24th and see if I can get our sponsor Creative Sounds to subsidize the trip. Frank --- On Wed, 10/14/09, ARDEN <ardenarindaeng@...> wrote:

Frank and all the cast who made the event fun, organized, and like a fiesta!
When I heard that it was 97 registrants total, my first thought was how can Tour de Francis this coming December beat that. But it was quickly forgotten with all the smiling faces and people that's there to be befriended. From registration time to the post meal, time flew pretty fast and this meant we were having too much fun. I can see why the peloton was controlled and timed to finish for a great party. I was impressed when El had a flat right after the start and that there's a replacement wheel ready for him. Deo and I dropped off to escort him back after the repair, but we were told by the SAG support to continue on with the ride and not to worry about it. El will make it back to the group. Rest assured he was! Even if the ride was strictly controlled, you can hear almost all of the participants chatting around, I guess part of that is making new friends. It was a fun ride anyway and not a competitive race. My itchy legs was wanting some fast pace riding later that morning but it didn't matter, we were all enjoying the moment.
Too many Pinoys taking the whole lane was just amazing! Great route! I wish we have something like that in Los Angeles! Its just what I need. Great rolling SAGS and stops. Maybe the complaint you had was just because the rider came in to the SAG stops very late and had nothing left for him. Maybe he didn't know what to expect or maybe was just didn't had breakfast. Well, hopefully he can get stronger and faster next time where he can enjoy peloton bennies to enjoy some food and drinks. But maybe I'm wrong and just don't know all the facts.
Back at the park, it was just great food, a lot, but just enough to please everyone! The giveaways and donations hit the spot. It was hard to leave even if we had about 350 miles to tackle to get home. It was fun treking back south, it was fun driving up north too! It seemed like a weekend escapade with friends.
Anyway, thank you for the great dinner that Saturday night! Thank you to Maui, Sally, and to you for the wonderful food and entertaining stories. We knew you all were busy preparing for the event that night but you all were still very welcoming and so hospitable to us. Thanks!
Hopefully we can see you all, the cast of Luzvimin, and all other cycling clubs of NorCal this December. Now its time for us to create the fun and hope we can beat 97 registrants. Let's target 100 riders!

Legstrong, Thanks for organizing the Wednesday Night Skills Training at Carson Crit!
To all,
We all know how important is it to learn other skills other than building stamina on long weekend rides or hill climbs. Naturally, that includes the friendship we all don’t want to miss out on! But in order for everyone to benefit from these sprint intervals, you have to be consistent practicing it and has to be repetitive for months and years even if it’s perfected. Over time, it will be learned how to naturally react to sprint situations without focusing too much on it, second nature in other words. Other than the many uses in racing defensively or offensively, this skill can be used from catching up to a rider or a group just ahead of you or if the rider in front of you bailed out from the line and you desperately need that draft from the peloton. In addition, you can learn to be more comfortable to be on an off-the-saddle position on flats at faster cadence when needed.
There are also other benefits with respect to our weekly ride schedules and the types of rides we do. Instead of the planned Sunday morning training ride, at the same time, we also have many members climbing GMR. So in a way, it divides the group which is not favorable.
I think we now have diversified really well in terms of the types of rides we do ((ADOBO Velo scheduled rides and non-ADOBO Velo rides):
No ride scheduled Mondays.
Tuesday is a 1-hour Criterium ride mixed with non-ADOBO Velo riders and originally started by Pinoy cyclists many years ago. Everyone is still welcome to gain from this ride. Tuesday is a 1-hour Criterium ride where I was planning to have Group “B” but it didn’t seem to be well received. The pace of this ride together with other non-club members is somewhat uncomfortable to others where slower riders continue on with other riders who had also bailed out or dropped from the pack. This is still beneficial but this crit ride created few slower groups or the rider basically stops riding for the night. Because of that, I thought of forming or gathering that as Group “B” and also riding with them. This can create safety by lessening the obstacles (traffic) for everyone on the road especially that this is an evening ride. Its dark, no one or only a few uses headlights and tailights. But as weeks of noticing this, everyone who shows up for this ride has an expectation of riding in the group as long as they can. It is a good plan and I will never influence them and change their intent. In fact, everyone “has” to experience this difficult moment of their ride. This is also a good way to measure of where you are compared to the other riders and in a competitive criterium group. This night emphasizes on speed training. We can disregard having Group “B” for this ride.
Wednesday night training ride: Some of us had done Deo’s Sunday mornings before, calisthenics or exercises were done before riding but the turnout is not the same compared to the 2 Wednesdays we had. There’s definitely more people showing up and a purely a new ADOBO Velo ride. Since I can’t show up at 7pm, I usually witness the last part where some are warming down or had changed clothes already. I just hope we can also endure the winter nights as it gets cold for a few months. But anyway, this training ride was well received and is added to our weekly schedule. For those who don’t know this place, you can find the details at the “Official Rides”. The details of the Tuesday night crit ride is updated to reflect our new training night ride and is also a good reference to find the location and to get familiarize with the place. This night emphasizes on sprint training and easy spinning. This will be a “Group B” pace and sprints.
July 30 Update for Wednesday night training ride:
Please make it an effort to arrive and be ready before 7pm.Meet at the starting line at 7pm and Deo will give instructions before the ride starts. Efforts will vary every week. I suggest the most knowledgeable member to start the efforts so the others can visualize them before their turn comes. The double paceline is at Group B pace. The last 5 laps will be at a faster pace and will end as a competitive sprint up to the finish line. We expect to finish a little after 8pm. Food time and other items that needs to be discussed will follow. It was decided to be a quick and easy potluck but it must be known who will be bringing food on the next Wednesday nights. Please post in our Yahoo Group Forum if you plan to bring food. Thanks.
August 29, 2009 Update for Wednesday night training ride: If Deo is late, warm-ups will start at exactly 7pm and will end after 20 minutes. Start at the starting line again as intervals will follow. Training will end with fast laps when the light turns on.
Thursday is "non-ADOBO Velo" an all-out 1-hour Criterium ride. Cyclists of all levels from all over Los Angeles anf from different cycling clubs and racing teams shows up here so this means this is a fast ride with breakaways always happening. Consider this as a race! Since there’s only a handful of Pinoy cyclists showing up and somewhat avoided by most of us including me, I think the Tuesday and Wednesday nights will not affect the strength to those who shows up for this ride, so I think it’s a wash in reference to our new Wednesday Training Night. This night emphasizes on your competitive edge, pure speed that is. This will be “Beyond Group A” Category but this also forms a Group "A" and some Group "B" paces. If you become comfortable with our Tuesday night crit and had built confidence for this ride or possibly looking for more challenge, I encourage you to experience this higher level of crit racing.
No ride scheduled on Fridays.
Saturday – Liberty Park. We really need to constantly organize this ride with Groups “A”, and “B”, and sweepers. The river bed trail is definitely a neutral zone, Group “B” pace. You all know what I mean by now.
Sunday – Duarte Chapter, Glendora Mountain Roads. Hills... after hills... after hills! This is our mountain goat's domain! You all know what this ride is all about by now and we can’t have another scheduled ride together with this and other scheduled rides.
So, that’s an overview of our weekly schedule not including century rides and races. Granted that everyone is not expected to be at all these rides considering the most important things in our lives, but I am encouraging you to be at rides where you enjoy the most, but also where you need to improve, and especially when it’s permissible. It is also accepted that there are other smaller non-scheduled rides and routes that you are into, a.k.a. secret training. If possible, please continue to invite others to ride with you. Wednesday nights is a very good creation by Legstrong that it frees up the Sunday GMR hills ride if we pursue this skills training ride to be on the same day and time. This separates but also adds building skills to our forte, and especially it is such a good turnout! In fact, it’s about the same-sized group as the Tuesday nights with other non-ADOBO Velo members which I was not expecting at all. Only that we are all parked in one area! Thanks Legstrong! Thank you Deo for sharing you knowledge and forcing us to do sprint intervals.
I heard its pancit next Wednesday! But who’s bringing it! What's the possibility of having food every time?
William, I think you deserve to be as POC for this ride. Please keep close tabs with Deo for this ride.
If you’re new to the club and/or need more information about each of the rides mentioned, please visit the “Weekly Rides” found in the Navigation Box on the left.
Lastly, please have our first-aid kits available on all rides.
Sincerely,
Arden Arindaeng

Cycling Friends,
It is with deep regrets that our scheduled Giro d' Barkada will be moved towards the end later part of August or early September.
The ride has bee re-scheduled to a conflict with the Nothern California/Nevada Masters District Championship.
I sent out emails to all concerned cyclists and friends last month and again early this month but unfortunately, I still missed a few who have already made plans for the 3rd GdB and I once again apologize.
The main reason for the re-scheduled GdB is because our Masters, Tom Alves and Manuel Reynante have a big chance of getting a podium finish in the 60+ and 65+ or better yet a Gold. With this possibility we really can't pass up the opportunity as they carry our colors and make us proud. Both just finished in the top 5 at the Leesville Gap Road Race (60 miles w/ >5000 feet of climbing).
Our Team Coach and Team Mechanic will be with them in Minden, Nevada for this championship event. They will be supported and followed by the Vellum Team car on the road race driven by our Team Coach and Team Mechanic.
All logistics are in place including the hotel where they will be billeted for this weekend.
Let's all wish our masters the best of luck and ride hard and safe!
Again, my apologies...
As soon as the date is set, I will inform you immediately.

El,
Wow! I am so glad to hear that you are ok. A bullet landing a meter in front of you is just too close for comfort. I hope this does not become a trend. Or worse, a copy cat perpetrator. This incident should be reported to the proper authorities for the safety of all bikers that cross that path. This happened before 12 noon July 12th??

Well, that was after midnight incident... mine was before noon time.
BEWARE guys!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! (Whittier Area)
Today (July 12' 09) I was riding from South going North (San Gabriel River) just after I came out from the tunnel (Whittier Blvd). I heard a gun shot & heard a bullet landed on the pavement just a meter away in front of me. I was very lucky that he only fired once. I looked back but didn't see anyone. There was another cyclist coming from North & I reminded him about the shooting. I've been using this trail since 80's and this is the first time.. I know Jessie came from Turnbull Canyon today.
Just to let you know guys. If it's not meant for you it's not for you.
I was very lucky that the bullet didn't landed on me.

The unfortunate chain of events that occurred Saturday morning all the way up Bouquet Canyon as described in this article are frightening. Even with a concerned motorist trying to follow him as he called 911 it seemed unavoidable that it would end badly.

Yes Francis, we were fortunate that day. Saturday morning I called Henry and we decided not to ride with the club, although we usually went along what the club route was on schedule on weekends even if we're late. Instead 3 of us (Henry, Jose whom you rode with on the Grand Tour 300 and myself) decided to go to Foothill and do the Little Tujunga climb.
The accident occurred just below the Lodge biker bar on Bouquet as a single line of riders rounded a corner; SCVELO members Larry Verdugo, Bari Waalk, Bob Wright, Shawn Fluken, Mike Berretta, Chad Lewin, Jimmy Jimenez, George Munana and Joe Novotny were descending at speed when the F150 truck drove straight into the group; there was no time to react and the riders were struck in various degrees.. There was a following group including Tony Tannehill and Bob Santaella that came upon the scene, and the Sheriffs were there almost immediately. Although medical aid arrived quickly, Joe was killed on the spot. The CHP received a call that there was an erractic driver on Bouquet and Urbandale. One officer remained at the scene, his partner continued north to Lake Elizabeth where the driver was apprehended. The authorities closed the road as a crime scene and it was sometime before everyone was able to leave and return home.
One of our club member had a friend at the local CHP office. The driver as we all know by now was an underage drinker. He will be arraigned this Tuesday and the CHP is dilligently working to get the report completed. The driver was apx 3 times over the legal limit but has no priors. I'm sure this is no consolation; but he'll be going away for a very long time. As he said there are 2 victims; obviously Joe, but a young kid who just threw his life away.
Our club here has been getting new members showing up on weekends. Joe Novotny and his wife moved to Santa Clarita earlier this year from Belgium and he has been actively riding with the club for a few months.
As for all of us, we are extremely heart broken by this tragedy. We just wished that those who had been injured will recover well and recover from this traumatic experience. These days whenever I plan to ride off the bike path here on our area I usually bring a riding buddy along with me. I know it doesnt make you more safer but it gives you some confidence and thats all we need when we hear tragedies like this.
Will keep you posted....Ride safe everyone.

MAY 15 UPDATE:
It's only 2 weeks away before our Grande Party! We must call it 'Grande' since its a whole lot of mixture of celebrations! In addition to that, we have more accomplishments to recognize! Just like El Prez, Rosalie, Jesse Agrezor, Richard Dones, Jun Usi; one more KOM Stage at Heartbreak Hundred next week, and they will earn the right to wear the 2009 KOM Series Finisher. Jaimer, Mandy, Manny Amit, Reggie Ferraz, Pete, and Francis either completed Mulholland Challenge or Breathless Agony KOM Stages. And how about Wilson Blas' first and third place finishes at CBR's Cat 3/4 Criteriums. All Astig qualifier events just like what Manny Amit and Jun Usi did lately to become one!
We can't change topics unless we mention what Legstrong has been doing lately... William Aligue aka Legstrong hasn't been given much applause as he completed 2 California Triple Crown Stage Races at a distance of 200 miles each race. One more 200 miler in August and he will add 2009 CTC Stage Races Finisher in his amazing list of accomplishments.
We also can’t forget Jesse Sta Maria’s contributions ever since the club’s beginnings, as the Club President for 4 years! We can make it officially from May 2005 to May 2009 but we know its longer than that! Those are more than 4 oustanding years of great synergy and big accomplishments managing the club. It won’t be justice if we don’t thank him!
On the different note, it will be the first time for our club to assist at a USCF sanction event and this will be at San Pedro Grand Prix come June 21st. We would like to thank Oscar Sagalongos for getting this dialogue started and we together with the officers had made this commitment as part of our responsibility to the cycling world. We have invited the organizers of San Pedro Grand Prix, Mr. Brad House and Mr. Mark Haruma to be with us during our festivities as they can shed more info and answer any questions we may have concerning this upcoming event, volunteer work, the free race as a benefit, and parking. In the meantime, please check your busy schedules and see if you are available that Sunday. We will also start the list of volunteers. We are encouraging everyone to enjoy this event which is in close proximity of Port O' Call, volunteer a couple of hours of your time and you will be able to race for free (2nd race will be charged at $10)! Registered or non-registered USCF members are very much encouraged to be part of this. I know we have a few beginners who wanted to try a Criterium race, so don't let this go by! In fact, bring your love ones and spend some time at Port O' Call also! Or enjoy a relaxing (no, painful is a better word) ride at Palos Verdes Peninsula or PV East called the switchbacks! Do you all want to see San Pedro's version of Fargo Hill Climb?
As part of the preparation for our Grande celebration, we will order a cake (1/2 sheet)! At Albertson's, order it by Wednesday or earlier. But we need your help in creating the phrases and greetings that will go on the design. If there is anyone who can actually take care of this, we will be very thankful. Our treasurer will reimburse you the expenses. I think I have some candles and glitters I can bring (I still have to check). The usual... plates (variety), utensils (all kinds), napkins, drinks (sodas - regular & diet, bottled water, Gatorade), and lots of ice are also on the works.
Please don't forget to bring your folding chairs so you can rest those tired legs. Extra tables are always a plus. I think we need 2 or 3 extra tables. Let us know if you can bring one. Thanks.
Once again, we need your help in making our "4th Anniversary-Birthday Celebrants-Great Accomplishments-New Astigs-Thank You El Prez" Party a success and easy to organize. Please post, email, or call me. Thanks!
Sincerely,
Arden

ADOBO Velo's 4th ANNIVERSARY is coming this May 7th AND we we are going to celebrate!
To get started, here’s our May B-day celebrants! We have Robert Seeckts, Dennis Gorospe, Nouie Navalta, Abraham 'Suave' Borillo, Jonas Mas, Jesse 'El Prez' Sta Maria, our Pinoy Prides WilsonBlas and Deograves Asuncion. Happy B-day to all of you!
Let's also celebrate our new ASTIGs: Jesse Agrezor for his 2nd place finish at Fargo Hill Climb and Jun Usi for braving Mulholland KOM Challenge. We may have a few more new Astigs in the making in the next few days! And the 2 big accomplishments Rosalie just earned, the California Triple Crown Recipient she earned at the earliest possible given time this year. And the new Fargo Hill Climb Women’s, record back to back! The second place cannot even get close to her climb total! AND William Legstrong for enduring his first road race in his life! The problem is, it took him 16 hours to finish this event... and it was a 200-mile race with 18,600 feet of climbing! It made Criterium and Track racing like a baby race! There will be more big accomplishments earned and newly crowned ASTIGs until party time! This month is just full of opportunities!
Last but not least, this celebration won't be complete without giving a BIG THANK YOU party to our first and former Club President Jesse ‘El Prez’ Sta Maria!
Sad to say we can't party hard on the 7th but we are going to celebrate on the 30th at Liberty Park! El Prez will be there and catering by the Uyan Family is confirmed. But we still need to coordinate all the other things needed.
If you're name appears in this announcement… you have to be there! Now will this be a convincing invitation for a really short ride that Saturday? I hope it is… So with all these good things going on, this month is not an excuse not to celebrate! Let’s all help out to make this GRANDE!
