Adjusting Expansion Valve

adjusting expansion valve
    expansion valve
  • An expansion valve is a slide valve used in a steam engine to control the cut-off. It rides on the back of an adapted main slide valve and is driven by an additional eccentric that has more advance than the main eccentric. The cut-off is adjusted in one of two ways.
  • A part of an air-conditioning system, located between the Condenser and the Evaporator that regulates the flow of liquid Refrigerant to the vaporator.
  • A refrigerant-metering valve with a pressure or temperature controlled orifice.
    adjusting
  • (adjust) alter or regulate so as to achieve accuracy or conform to a standard; "Adjust the clock, please"; "correct the alignment of the front wheels"
  • Adapt or become used to a new situation
  • (adjust) align: place in a line or arrange so as to be parallel or straight; "align the car with the curb"; "align the sheets of paper on the table"
  • (adjust) adapt or conform oneself to new or different conditions; "We must adjust to the bad economic situation"
  • Alter or move (something) slightly in order to achieve the desired fit, appearance, or result
  • Permit small alterations or movements so as to allow a desired fit, appearance, or result to be achieved

Cafe racer mods to a yamaha rd350. From memory, it was a dunstall fibreglass tank and seat combo, clip-ons, rear sets, stripped the paint from the engine covers and polished the aluminium. and I think the blinkers were non-standard. Think I spray painted as a homer at the sheet metal workshop where I worked at the time. Performance was tweaked by cleaning up the ports by hand with rasp files and garnet paper, adding larger carbs with foam pod airfilters, replaced the steel reed valves with fibreglass, hanco expansion chambers, then adjusting the oil pump and jetting to have it tuned to be perfect for a warm spring morning ride. Replaced the standard shocks with Koni items, and added air valves and new damping oil to the forks. The handling was actually pretty good for its day, the main problem was weight with so much use of steel. The stock pegs and pipes and centre stand weighed a ton, and massively reduced clearance - had to replace it all soon enough as it got worn down very quickly. Air cooling meant a pretty narrow range, so if it was not a perfect spring day and a wide open road and the jetting was not adjusted as too lazy, it meant either seizing the pistons or fouling the plugs. I used to carry a coupla sets of spark plugs in my jacket pockets for when I got stuck in traffic and they got fouled up. The carb slides would stick in wet weather which made it interesting sometimes, and the tank used to leak in hot weather. So, aside from having one hand hovering the clutch for seizures and the other over the kill switch for the sticky carby slides, there was no room left to worry about the hazards of the riding. Maybe this was why it would beat all those kwaka 9s and honda fours on a windy road, they only had to worry about tank slappers and wobbles!

Topaz Adjust... The jury is still out
I downloaded the trial for Topaz Adjust and spent some time playing with some of the ligthhouse shots from a week or so ago... I'm not certain I like the results, although I hardly know what I am doing with the program yet.
