Brentwood
Brentwood
The main road between Romford and Brentwood was once hotly contested, with London Transport route 86, Green Line coach 721 and various services* of Eastern National and its predecessors all plying the route. Today a half-hourly single decker on Transport for London route 498 seems to suffice, although there are additional double-deck journeys on schooldays to cater for the large number of schoolchildren in the London Borough of Havering who go to schools in Brentwood. First Enviro200 Dart DML44075 sets down in Brentwood High Street; it will terminate just round the corner adjacent to Sainsbury's. * These services included the famous 251 which ran all the way from London (Wood Green) to Southend. This had been acquired from City Coach Company in 1952; City had operated as far as Kentish Town but the route was shortened (!) in 1947. City also had a depot in Wood Green which Eastern National acquired and kept operational until June 1981. From then on the route gradually died away, traffic congestion and staff shortages having made it impossible to run such a long route reliably and economically.
