Description
The Sarno Gate lies at the eastern limit of the Via dell'Abbondanza. Like the Vesuvius Gate, it sustained considerable damage and little remains to be seen today.
The
south eastern side of the gate is still standing (pictured right), but
the western part is almost completely destroyed. The gate led to the
Sarno Valley.

The
landscape of the valley has changed considerably since AD79
eruption.
Studies of bore holes from around Pompeii show that the
shoreline moved about 1 km westwards due to the eruption of AD79.
..
The
Sarno coastal plain has been constantly affected by volcanic activity
since the late Pleistocene. At its maximum, the sea reached an area
east of Pompeii and formed a beach ridge more than 2 km inland from the
present shore.

The city walls are still in a reasonable condition, especially the part either side of the Nola Gate (pictured right).
