'Fanny' - classic crossbreed
During 1988-89, I built a kit car using mainly Ford Escort and Cortina parts. Built on a steel chassis, the body was made from marine ply. The car was a JC Midge - I named her, Fanny. Initiallly the aluminium body panels were polished - the wooden body was vinyl covered in the manner of fabric bodies of the thirties. Most days I drove it like this with the tonneau cover over the passenger seat - even in the winter the heater (a 100E unit) pumped out enough heat to keep me warm. Even in light rain, with a cap on you didn't get wet unless you stopped moving! Originally a 1300cc engine was used which was quite lively but when replaced by a 1600cc, things got even quicker. Suspension was the firm side of harsh - if you ran over a penny you could feel if it was heads or tails!
