Gate Valve Function

(GATE VALVES) have a wheel type handle. Several turns of the handle are required to turn off a gate valve. Gate valves are most commonly used on main line pipes with high water pressure or high water flow.

A valve that lets you completely stop, but not modulate, the flow within a pipe.

Gates

Huge gates on the Gibraltar spillway meter the reservoir's water level. Functioning much like a giant toilet valve, they open from the bottom up when a buoy inside the reservoir reaches a certain elevation. The buoy opens a valve that fills a small compartment, changing the weight balance of the monstrous steel doors. Having seen the gates open to a four foot gap, the dam keeper describes the sound of the rushing water as thunderous.
