About Me

Name: Mariane Héroux

Education:  I have a BSc in Human Kinetics from the University of Ottawa, an MSc in Community Health and Epidemiology from Queen's University, and am currently working on a PhD in Kinesiology and Health Studies at Queen's University. My research is focused on childhood obesity and obesity prevention through nutrition and physical activity initiatives. While completing my undergraduate degree, I fulfilled a nutrition certificate program with the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition and worked as a nutritionist for a total of 4 years while continuing my studies. Although I am not an RD (registered dietitian) my education, research, and drive to stay up to date with current nutrition literature provides me with vast nutrition knowledge.

A bit about my past:  Nutrition has always been an important part of my life. Throughout my childhood and adolescent years, I competed as a provincial gymnast dedicating up to 16 hours a week to training. Being a high level athlete, I learned at a very young age the importance of healthy eating. I now truly understand the impact and significance of nutrition for optimal sports performance and overall general health.

My views on food: Choosing healthy food and maintaining a healthy diet is imperative to good health and longevity. I realize that for many, choosing healthy food can be challenging and confusing amidst the plethora of unhealthy, inexpensive food items available. But challenges are good and you should be challenging yourself to seek out only healthy items to nourish your body.  With the drastic rise in obesity, inactivity, and chronic disease, I cannot stress enough the importance of making healthy eating and physical activity a priority in your everyday life. I don't understand how people can think it's ok to pollute their bodies with refined, deep fried, high calorie and low nutrient foods while also being inactive. You only have one body, so why not take care of it?
