The problem of common standards in education in the EU has been resolved to a large extent at the level of language standards by the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) which, however, has left unresolved the problem of finding common standards for concepts and content. Such common standards would help both students who in the future may wish to seek employment in other countries and also assist students who move to another country with their family. Most EU schools are already having to face the problem of how to help these latter students integrate socially and scholastically. Students' needs and competences should be assessed and schools should be able to offer adequate linguistic and cultural education in order to favour the integration into the new community. Teaching content through foreign languages can play an important role in bridging the gap between diverse cultures and in allowing students to acquire and share knowledge and competences using a common language.
