But without this playing with fantasy no creative work has ever yet come to birth. The debt we owe to the play of imagination is incalculable." (Jung 1921, par. 93)

The transcendent function facilitates the transition from one attitude to another. Jung described it as (Jung 1916/58 par.189). It encompasses both a method and an inborn function of the psyche.

The term 'active imagination' refers only to the method, but both are creative, integrative functions that shape and transform the living symbol.
