Create your online library account

posted Apr 29, 2012 5:23 PM by Leann Seddon   [ updated Apr 29, 2012 5:34 PM ]

Students and/or Parents -
Did you know that with our Follett Destiny library catalog, you are able to create an online library account?  It allows you to see what books you have checked out, when they are due, any fines you may owe, and more.  You can even search for books and request that we hold them for you.  You can receive library notifications via email, as well.

Go to www.bit.ly/acsd1 for a video tutorial on how to set up your account.  (It may take awhile to load or buffer -- please be patient.)
The school library catalogs can be accessed at http://albia.follettdestiny.com.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

PTO's Dr. Seuss/Read Across America Family Night

posted Feb 28, 2012 11:31 PM by Leann Seddon

The Grant PTO is holding a family reading night on March 2nd as a culminating activity to the week-long Dr. Seuss celebration.  Preschool through second grade students and their families are invited to the “Read Across America: Oh the Places You’ll Go” reading night.  It will be held at the Albia Community High School on Friday, March 2nd from 6 – 8 p.m.

During the reading event, families will “travel” to different reading stations to read books and participate in activities related to different locations and habitats across America.  When students exit a station, they will receive a stamp in a ‘passport.’ At the end of their ‘journey,’ they will return to a “port of entry” and receive a special Dr. Seuss reward.

Also featured at the reading night will be local author Sharon Burch, creator of the Freddie the Frog® book series.  Burch will conduct four sessions at the event and will be signing and selling her books at a 30% discount price.  Learn more about her and Freddie at www.freddiethefrogbooks.com.

Hope to see you there! But if not, please make sure you do read to a child on March 2nd.  Help send the message that reading is important!

Happy Reading!

Dr. Seuss and Read Across America Celebration

posted Feb 28, 2012 11:26 PM by Leann Seddon   [ updated Feb 28, 2012 11:26 PM ]

Dr. Seuss’s birthday isn’t until Friday, March 2nd, but Grant Elementary and Lincoln Center will celebrate reading, the beloved author’s birthday, and Read Across America all week long, beginning on Monday, February 27th. Along with other activities throughout the week, students and staff are encouraged to participate in Dr. Seuss Dress-Up Days.

Dr. Seuss Dress-Up Days (Please do not go out and buy anything new, though.)
Monday, Feb. 27 - Pajama Day
Tuesday, Feb. 28 - Crazy Socks Day
Wednesday, Feb. 29 - Wacky Wednesday -- Wear your shirt backwards/inside out and make your hair wacky, too!
Thursday, Mar. 1 - Favorite Color Day
Friday, Mar. 2 - Hat Day

The National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that encourages readers, both young and old, to celebrate reading. Here in the Albia community, we hope that every child will be reading with a caring adult on March 2nd. For more information about NEA's Read Across America, visit www.nea.org/readacross.

    And remember,
You're never too old, too wacky, too wild,
To pick up a book and read with a child.
You're never too busy, too cool, or too hot,
To pick up a book and share what you've got.

In schools and communities,
Let's gather around,
Let's pick up a book,
Let's pass it around.

There are kids all around you,
Kids who will need
Someone to hug,
Someone to read.

Come join us March 2nd
Your own special way
And make this America's
Read to Kids Day
