Nagafen's PvP Briefing 101

This guide was written because, during the course of my typical mass-invitations to Ministry of Hate, I would free-lance tips for novices. One of them suggested I archive the details for the future. Here is the final product after about a week of work. It is the most thorough guide anyone will ever find on competence in EQ2 PvP, if such is a priority for pursuing fun.

Part 1:
Situational Awareness - A player needs to master their reflex and observational skills within the open world.
1. First, a newbie should go to "Options -> Controls -> View Options -> Free look controls > Choose 'View relative' from the dropdown". Classes that rely on the skill to "kite" (like Troubadors/Rangers) might want "Avatar relative" & no auto facing.
2. Practicing proficiency in holding down "LMB" (left mouse button) and panning the camera around while using the W, A, S, or D keys to move will increase adroit mobility. Using auto-run & scanning the environment also helps while being chased.
3. Under "Options > Controls > View Options > Enable Combat Auto Face" should also be checked. Trying to target an enemy with "/ta NAME" & then engaging auto-attack can often operate as a form of ghetto/pseudo tracking, as you face where enemies are.
4. Beneath "Options > Controls > Keyboard Settings > Keyboard Turn Sensitivity" should be set to fast, as this also helps in dextrous movement. "Esc cancels casting" should also be checked in this area. Quick respondence is key in heated scenarios.
5. Assigning a keyboard shortcut to auto attack under "Options > Controls > Command Keys > Auto Attack" will also help you clear up space on your hotbars & be ready for combat on the fly. This also helps with pseudo tracking as a non-scout.
6. Attributing a keybind to target your previous target under "Options > Controls > Targeting Keys > Select Previous Target" will also help you quickly retarget your last enemy in case you get detaunted by DPS classes or taunted by fighters.
7. All characteristics under "Options > User Interface > Target Arrow/Ring" should be enabled & maximized as to make your enemies most noticable. "Options > User Interface > Name & Chat Bubble > Target Name Border" should also be checked.
8. Leaving encounters without a name border (& targets w/ 1) helps isolate a single target within the crowd of a group or raid. Chat bubbles under the prior options category should also be moved to 1 or 0 in case targeting is hard from multiple messages in /say.

Part 2: Securing a Framework - Finances in any MMO enable a player to equip their characters w/ the strongest supplies available. Gear, spells/combat arts, jewelry, weapons/shields, all of this should be at least Mastercrafted (MC). Artisans make MC.
1. Making money can be done in many ways. A player can harvest nodes for rare raws that artisans use to make MC goods, or they can try to collect as many rare raws of a certain type & craft them into MC items to resell them for 50-300% profit.
2. Players can also farm, repeatedly killing placeholders & named monsters in order to get Fabled Master 1 (M1) spells or gear, to sell on the broker. Selling on the broker requires a box or salesman's crate. Player's visit homes to buy without a tax.
3. Harvesting shinies (golden sparkles) gets collectables, w/ rare ones also worth a moderate to SUBSTANTIAL amount of coin. Getting an inn/home & salesman crate to place in your abode is key, as this can remove the tax from selling on the broker.
4a. Every artisan can make adornments. These "Enigma" recipes are given at every 5th level of the tier. Google "britannic lore eq2 adornments" to obtain a MOST thorough spreadsheet for raws, items created, & professions associated w/ adornments.
4b. Adornments sell for a lot, but so do raws required to make them. Players can become Tinkerers or Transmuters on Butcherblock Mountains docks (accessed via griffon in TD or boats from NF/TS docks). Transmuters use a spell to turn goods into raws.
4c. Treasured items become fragments/powders, MC/Legendary items can become powders/infusions, & Fabled items can become manas/infusions.Buying booster packs from LegendsOfNorrath.com & selling them in-game is also a quick way to get tons of coin.
5. Using money to buy raws & craft them into MC goods is most economical until you have 10-80 plat to use as a base for launching successful, competent toons. M1 spells/combat arts are recommended, but Adept 3s/Expert spells & combart arts, from rare raws, are fine.
5a. Research Assistants¹ are found in each municipality, each city township, and they can train any spell or combat art from Expert level to the Master level, provided you've the patience to wait for their services over the course of days.
6. Purchasing MC gear is the bare minimum if you expect to have a stable chance of being victorious, & farming named mobs or instances for special Legendary/Fabled items is recommended. LootDB.com has filters that you can use to search for upgrades.
7a. The artisan professions are Outfitter (Armorer/Tailor/Weaponsmith), Craftsmen (Woodworker/Carpenter/Provisioner), & Scholar (Sage/Alchemist/Jeweler). If you pick a profession, you have to get recipes from adventuring, the broker, or NPCs.
7b. Tailors make bags/hex dolls/leather & cloth armor/throwing weapon satchels, Woodworkers make shields/bows/arrows/wands/exhaustible totems (special effects are given from these, more on this later). Sages make mage/priest spells.
7c. Jewelers make scout spells, jewelry, & some ranged items. Alchemists make poisons for scouts, potions for all classes, & spells/combat arts for fighters. Carpenters make furniture/boxes/salesmans crates. Armorers make heavy shields & chain/plate.
7d. Being an artisan that benefits your class helps. Provisioners make food/drink (which adds to health/power regen while out of combat). Minor stat bonuses are also given. The tier above yours gives you maximum bonuses. LVL10-19 use LVL20 provisions.
8. Crafting w/ the lowest amount of power will help you survive spell intensive combines. Remove gear/buffs that add to your power pool, as artisan spells that do flat mods to progress/durability require a fixed % of your power. Regen will then be more potent.
9. Using a "fence" (a black market broker that shows product from all factions) will help you find the cheapest rates. Most easily found in Gorowyn, quests can be done to spawn them in Antonica or Commonlands (from Qeynos Harbor or East Freeport).
10. If finding teammates to group w/ or help you is difficult, refer to part 6, line 2c for certain commands able to compliment your efforts.

Part 3: Alternate Achievement (AA) Development - In order to build your secondary line of advancement in EQ2, you can discover locations, kill named monsters, quest, discover prized items for the first time, or do collection quests.
1. EQ2Flames.com has a wealth of player information & opinions on class structuring, & if people are unable to provide solutions to you in public chat channels, I suggest going there for solid AA suggestions.
2. With GU #49, mentoring a certain # of levels below you rewards a bonus on AA XP for killing named mobs or discovering prized items for the first time. Leveling by questing (w/ all XP disabled), then going back w/ a friend to mentor a lowbie for named is economical.
3. Mentoring 6-10 LVLs of difference: 50% bonus, 11-20 LVLs: 100%, 21-30 LVLs: 150%, 31-50 LVLs: 200%, 51+ LVLs: 300%. You can only get AA XP from a named mob the first time, so you can't go back & mentor for a bonus if you don't do so at first.
4. Collectible quests & discovery XP give the least amount of AA XP compared to adventurer XP rewarded. Creating a potent toon involves having a higher proportion of AAs than you do adventurer LVLs. The AA cap is 1.5 x your LVL until LVL 70.
5. To respecify AA builds, Achievement Counselors¹ can be spoken w/ to reset 1/4 branches per coin sum. 10s, 10 g, 1 p, 10 p are the rates. Relative to each specific tree, decay to the 10 s price occurs 1 month after any respecifcation purchase.

Part 4: Player Versus Player Strategies
- Being aware of the ins & outs of combat are key if you want to enjoy the domination of all oppositional players alike. Aside from gearing out & being situationally aware, there are other tricks available.
1. You gain PvP ranks by killing those ranked 1 notch above, below, or on par with your own. The title system is as follows: Unranked > Hunter > Slayer > Destroyer > Champion > Dreadnaught > General -> Master -> Overseer
2a. If you need to travel w/ coin, buy top tier fuel from wholesalers, as its resale value is 100%, selling from 1g, 6 g, to 60 g. Some say you lose rare harvested raws, some say you lose regular treasured, but bank any rare harvestables when near a banker, just to be sure.
2b. So long as your prospects are aware, conducting trades in the field & on the fly then become possible, being something I do w/out the worry of coin loss due to PvP (where you lose about 60% or more of what you were carrying).
3a. Remedies come in handcrafted (HC) & MC forms. Made by Alchemists, they cure sustained effects that enemies put on you. Damage over time effects, stat debuffs, snares & roots, all these things can be cured if you have the right remedies inventoried.
3b. The general types of hostile affects are shown by a little icon next to a red cross in the group roster menu. Arcane is shown by a pink sparkle near the red cross, Trauma a sword, Noxious a green vial, & Elemental a snowflake.
4. Class detection is most easily done by targeting an enemy & hovering your cursor over their yellow buffs. These are self-only buffs where class names are usually mentioned. Devising a strategy based upon class ensures suitable precautions.
5. Counteracting stealthed or invisible foes is done by using a Totem of the Owl² or Totem of the Butterfly². Scouts need these to have track pick up those who are stealthed or invisible. Woodworkers make these totems & they can be used at LVL 20.
6. Responding to stuns & stifles can be done without remedies at LVL 30, through "Freedom of the Mind²" potions made by Alchemists. Operating against snares or roots may also be done with "Freedom of the Action²" potions available at the same LVL.
7. Grouping up & relying on the support of numbers can help if your aim isn't to be immediately competitive, but quickly level to experience the newest content EQ2 has to offer. Of course, even successful PvPers rely on the help of others.
8a. To check if a particular enemy is in zone, target your self (press F1 or type "/ta YOURNAME"), then type "/ass ENEMYNAME". If you detarget, they are in zone. For that & the next technique, spelling must be completely perfect for it to work.
8b. If you are solo or group leader, you can type "/invite name". The first letter must be lowercase to realize the full effect. If you see "'name' couldn't be found", then that person isn't online.
8c. If you see "'name' is not aligned with your city." with the first letter lowercase, then they are online but in a different zone. If the first letter is uppercase, then they are online & in the same zone as you.
9. Making macros to target enemies that you know are in a zone, or those you are frequently engaging, will help a lot if there is a certain DPS class or priest you want to take out while circumventing their tank's longevity.
10. Saving to get a mount can help you avoid those who may pursue you through pure speed. Wardens also get 45% Spirit of the Wolf (SoW) & Mystics get 40% SoW w/ AAs spent. Running & zoning live or stall for reinforcements is a valid tactic.
11. Using melee weapons w/ a higher delay is best, as procs (programmed random occurences) are then more likely to trigger when you hit. DPS or haste mods will also be more effectual, & more time is alotted for spells/combat art usage.
12. Respawn at a different location and alternate your adventuring destination if you have the audacity (arrogance) to think you're being griefed. Only do you grief yourself when you stay in the same area to continually give enemies kills.
13. Carnage flags occurs when: a player enters an enemy city or a player attacks an enemy inside their city -- players are then attackable by any enemy, despite level. Suicide removes the carnage flag. Resets after 30 mins from the initial encounter.
14. Please remember to broadcast enemies you see on Level_1-9 & the other appropriate channels. Advertise their name (for targeting), level, class, PvP rank, & heading. When needed, this will help you garner as much support as you can.

Part 5: Miscellaneous Utilities & Suggestions - There are a wide array of outside resources players can use to augment their experience for aesthetics & ease in accomplishing one's task. Coordinate activities w/ voice chat when possible.
1. EQ2Interface.com can provide players with alternative styles. EQ2Map, Profit UI, & Fetish³ Nightfall³ are the most trusted & popularly used add-ons for EQ2. Directions are simple & concise, w/ options for customization available.
2. Maps.EQ2Interface.com allows players to search every POI (point of interest) in the EQ2Map add-on, but through a search engine online. This isolates the POI alone on an image of the zone or zones your query is located in.
3. EQ2i.com or EQ2.Allakhazam.com are good general resources for questing, spell lists, & more. Good zones to start questing in are Greater Faydark, Darklight Woods, Commonlands, Antonica, The Ruins, Wailing Caves, The Caves, or Timorous Deep.
4. EQ2.Fluffy.Dk has an organizable quest list w/ 6,000+ quests (many cross-linked w/ EQ2i.com) ; EQ2Ref.com has full, graphical base-/sub-class AA charts & progressional spell/CA trees (minutely outdated, but there nonetheless)
5. EQ2.EQTraders.com is a tradeskill center, often containing Game Update (GU) sneak peeks - using this utility is also a must have for decorating any player or guild owned domicile, as thorough catalogs of nearly all house items are exhibited.
6. AdvancedCombatTracker.com (ACT) hosts the log parse that siphons data in order to generate information on you & your encounters DPS, HPS, hit rate, critical hit rate, & kills. This is good to use to gauge how you're doing against encounters.
7. LootDB.com is a searchable database of in-game item links. It details drop location & frequency. You highlight, press Ctrl+C to copy, then Ctrl+V to paste. As part 2, line 6 of this guide mentioned, it's a very functional utility for procuring upgrades.
8. Don't forget to: as a priest, heal & cure, as a tank, taunt, as a scout, snare, debuff, & use totems to widen your track range. Mages, snare, root, maintain max range! Give enemy class/level/direction in public chat channels when you see them.
9. Items from PvP merchants (that call for faction* from player killing [PKing]), mounts, & city items may cost status as well. Doing rush writs as an artisan is the fastest way to obtain status. *Press "P", go to "Factions", then "Shattered Lands".
10. Type any potential beginning to a command syntax (a system of orderly arrangement) after "/" & then press tab. A list of all commands that began w/ whatever typed will appear. Try typing "/toggle" then pressing tab as an example.
11. Evaluate racial traits & statistical caps. Top tier players who are melee based also want to download & use the auto-attack notifier⁴ that synchs w/ ACT. This helps make the most of time in between swings for combat arts or spells.
12. FanFaire08.FeldonCentral.com has a lot of interesting insights such as lists of void shard chest keys, raid dropped bears, guild hall amenity calculators, & more.

Part 6: A Variety of Listings
1a. PvP related commands ("/pvp" shows your PvP stats): Click slash commands to review others officiated by SOE. There are, however, many more that exist, discoverable from using line 9 of part 5 in this guide.
1b. "/recent" Checks those killed in the last 30 mins, after which you can get status/fame(Qeynosian)/infamy(Freeportian)/notoriety(Exiled) from them again. Killing 20+ foes before 30 mins lets you again get credit from victims, in consecutive order.

2a. Communicative Commands:
2b. "/role" Hides your location so people can't "/ all YOURNAME"⁵ & find you ; "/anon" Hides your class so foes won't click you & immediately see your class (though you can discern such by looking for yellow buff boxes on your enemy)
2c. "/ all ONENUMBER TWONUMBER"⁵ Evaluates a portion of the population under a particular level range ("/ all 20 29" would return all those not "/anon" or "/role" flagged, to whom you can then send tells to investigate their availability)
2d. "/channellist" Shows your current public chat channels & their assigned # ; "/setchannelnumber ONENUMBER TWONUMBER" Changes channel # ; "/whochannel NUMBERHERE" Shows those in a channel w/ a cap at 100
2e. "/voice" Shows you the list of all the extensive voice chat commands ; "/leavechannelnumber NUMBERHERE" Exit a specific chat channel
2f. "/invite NAME" Group invitations can be used to check if someone really ignored you or not. If you aren't ignored, your invitation will go through. If you are, you'll receive a message saying "You cannot invite NAME because they are ignoring you."

3a. Useful Carnivorous Plant Products (like w/ results from LootDB.com, highlight, press "Ctrl+C" to copy, then press "Ctrl+V" where you place your cursor):

History using this advocacy has garnered me 1,224 LVL 60 PvP tokens, 255 LVL 70 Antonican Chivalry Tokens, 779 LVL 70 Void Tokens, 200 AAs, 17,019 kills/2069 deaths (a 8.2257129047849202513291445142581 : 1 K : D ratio), while also being a 4+ year veteran (5 year w/ expansion bonuses). My main character is General Dread Knight Seliri Deuvleri the Reaver (LVL 80 Shadowknight/80 Armorer). I do free combines for Ministry of Hate players so long as they provide the fuels. Fuel count can be found by reviewing recipes at EQ2.EQ2Traders.com -- mail can be sent to me in-game if any questions are to be had. As a 4 year vet (almost 5 w/ days added from expansions), there are a lot of exclusive areas of the game that one needs to devote focus to if success & competence is their concern as a PvPer. Hopefully my tips were as thorough as possible, & if you have a Gmail account, feel free to log in & add comments.

You can has commenting! If any of you know a modernized housing list like those found in the info centers for Fetish Nightfall & Profit UI, please link it here or forward it to me in-game. These info centers only carry specific details on abodes up to Kelethin, & not Neriak & Gorowyn. =\

For now, visiting http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Housing_Zones may do.

John K. - Feb 11, 2009 6:49 AM

Keep in mind, the one, most functional aspect of housing are the broker slots alotted. Different grades/costs exist based upon guild level. The following was copied from the info-center found in the Fetish UI. It is just a sample of the content the two higher grade custom interfaces offer.
