The Naturals Collection

The Fiber Room

I have always liked animals, but haven't had the space, time or facilities to have my own, so I've lived vicariously through friends with sheep and alpacas to obtain the fibers I use, as well as occasionally purchasing fibers from other sources.  I gladly help them with their stashes of fiber.  It is a compulsion, as many of you know, and sometimes there is excess.  I hate to see good fiber go to waste.  It is a natural renewable resource and has many good qualities which synthetics do not have.  Some people are afraid of the care of natural products because they have gotten used to throwing everything in the washer in one lump rather than hand washing less often.  Others worry about their sensitivities, not always realizing that it is sometimes the quality of the fiber that may be the issue, not the fiber itself, or that it can be paired with another fiber to reduce reactions.

Recently, I have been spending time during the winter months helping to tend a herd of 500 suri alpacas in the UK.  I have had the opportunity to spin and knit their yarn as well.  I enjoy the lond silky fibers which can be spun directly from the fleece without combing, when I'm feeling lazy.  For pictures of the prize-winning animals check out their website:  www.surialpacas.co.uk

Fibers

Do you like the feel of fiber in your hands?  Every fiber has different characteristics, whether from the same species or between different ones.  Some are smooth and silky and some are coarse and wiry.  Finding the right fiber for the right project is always a quest.  Below are links to some of the fibers on the following pages that I have available at the moment.

 Wool

Cotton

Yarns

The pleasure of spinning produces lots of yarn.  I wish I could find the time to use it all, but I can't. I've made some of these yarns available for purchase.  Click on the links to see details and prices of skeins in each category.
