Weekly Meetings

November 11

We talked about the Me to We t-shirt sale, which will be at the same time as the fair trade store.

Me to We t-shirts are t-shirts that are organic and made in Canada, and is a company that was co-founded by Craig Kielburger. Their new "Challenge Your Style" fundraiser allows us to sell t-shirts that would normally sell for $50 plus tax for $20, and make at least $4 off every t-shirt we sell. We'll have samples available, and we will be taking orders for these fantastic prices!

We decided that we will give the money we make off the t-shirts to Doctors Without Borders, a well-known organization that sends doctors in problem areas.

We finalized details for the Acoustic Café.

If anyone has third period spare, contact Sina about participating in the Vow of Silence November 20th from 11:30 to 2:00 at the Pen Centre, where you will join the Brock University Free the Children Group in a flash mob where you will have tape over your mouth with a t-shirt they will give you.

November 4

Sina reviewed who is doing what for the Acoustice Café. Make sure you remember what you signed up to do!

Fair Trade Store: We will have a little less chocolate than last time (probably about 36 bars, about what we sold last time).

There is a new addition to the fair trade store! We will sell t-shirts for me to we, where we are going to join a competition to win $5000 for our club. More to come next week.

October 28

Adrianna talked briefly about the Coat Collection.

October 21
We only reviewed what was talked about last week. Short meeting, about 15 minutes.

October 14
  • A petition was signed against the inferior treatment of aboriginal women.
  • Adrianna talked about the Coat collections happening October 26-November 6 for Community Care, and established who would do the adds and the posters.
  • Sina talked about the Acoustic Cafe, and what we'll be doing with that. It is November 19, after school, and people will pay to come see some of our bands play their music. Drinks (tea and hot chocolate) will be sold.

***Please note that I (Gaëlle) did not attend this meeting, and Adrianna and Sina would be better to contact for the above events.

October 7
  • We signed letters to convince Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon to help the less fortunate in Somalia (you can find it in the petitions page of the site)
  • We counted the glasses: on wednesday, we had 38, an impressive achievement considering not everyone has glasses.
  • Gaëlle briefly introduced our next fundraiser, which will be the coat collection. Adrianna will take care of this fundaiser, and will talk about it at the next meeting. We do know that it will be October 26- November 6, will go to Community Care, and that Community Care will provide the bins for the coats.
  • We again talked about the fair trade store. Note: It is now on Nov. 30-Dec. 3 and we will no longer have it every month. We will also have it the week before mother's day, May 3-7 (just about) Here are the people we have decided on for lunches for the store:

If anybody would like to participate, we will talk about that next week. If you would like, you may also change the date in which you participate. The ideas we came up on how to organize the Fair Trade Store are as follows:
  • Black Velvet Cloth
  • Chocolate Stand
  • Pyramid of Coffee
  • The sellers should wear some jewelry
  • We should have a sign with taxes for many prices on the tag.
  • We could have a tip Jar
  • We could ask people if they want their change back
  • It would be nice if we could have bracelet hangers.

September 30

  • We signed letters to stop the military from attacking Honduran citizens. Go to the Petitions page of our site to download and print the letter.
  • We talked about collecting Eyeglasses for Warehouse of Hope (www.warehouseofhope.com). Our eyeglasse-raiser is October 5-8 so don't forget to bring in your glasses and deposit them in the boxes at the East and Front Foyer!
  • We discussed the Fair Trade Store. The Fair Trade Store will be a table where we sell items from Ten Thousand Villages that are fair trade for maybe five days in a row, all three lunches. We would like to do it once a month on the second week of every month starting November 8. Everyone's lunches was collected so that we know who can look after the material and when they would do it. We decided on what we would want to sell (christmas ornaments, chocoate, jewelry, notebooks, coffee, tea, scarves, bags, lip balm, pens, pencils) We'll have background music from the store playing during store times. Who will be talking on the annoucements, who will be making an announcement, and who will be making posters has also been established.
Fair Trade: A type of traid that puts people before profits. The workers are payed a wage that helps them support their family and gives them a safe environment to work in. The workers often have a say in what their wage will be.

Ten Thousand Villages: A store that markets fair trade products (trade that provides with workers that enable them to support their family and work in a safe environment) to us North Americans so that we can make responsible choices when we buy various items. They sell chocolate, jewelry, body care products, paper, decoration, plates and ustensils, music and musical instruments, as well as many works of art. The local one is on Queen's Parade, in Niagara-on-the-Lake. There is also one in Port Colborne.

Note: Information has changed, We cannot do the Fair Trade Store every month now! Therefore, we will decide what to do at our next meeting

Anyone who would like to participate in or help out with the Fair Trade Store in any way (organize the table, look after it one lunch) can e-mail me at amnestyrocks@hotmail.com (me being Gaëlle)

September 23

  • We finalized our decisions on collecting eyeglasses for Warehouse for Hope (www.warehouseofhope.com), the Warehouse for Wells of Hope (www.wellsofhope.com) This Niagara-based organization collects many different items for Guatemala, does fundraisers and awareness-raisers throughout the region to help children in Guatemala, Haiti and other countries in that region. In two weeks time, from October 5-8, we will be collecting eyeglasses in baskets. We are still not sure if we can collect sunglasses and eyeglass cases, something we should find out by the next meeting. So don't forget to bring your old eyeglasses for the Give Glasses to Guatemala fundraiser!
  • We started talking about the Teens for Change t-shirts, and the challenge for the best t-shirt design has been started. Soon, we hope to have our very own t-shirts to let people know about us!

On September 16, everyone introduced themselves. Welcome to all the new members, and welcome back to the veterans!

We talked of our future projects:
  • We'll be selling Festival for Freedom Tickets September 21, 22, 28 and 29 all three lunches. Anyone who would like to help can come join Sina or Lea at the table to sell the tickets. Their only $25 if anyone is interested, and the show is October 5 at 8:00 p.m., at the Royal George Theatre, put on by Shaw Actors.
  • Wouldn't it be cool if we could have neon green t-shirts!
  • Collecting used items for the poor and Wells of Hope Foundation (www.wellsofhope.com) garage sale in our next fundraiser! We'll be collecting eyeglasses, functional computers, books, and anything that can be sold at a garage sale. This is what we'll be working in our next meeting.
  • We would like to do a Talent Show in December
  • We may be fundraising for World Vision and filling a stable from their catalog wit the Talent Show. (https://catalogue.worldvision.ca/gifts/Forms/Home.aspx?mc=3221603&lang=en)
