While it is a subscription web site, there are many free aspects to the web site. You can use the dictionary for a beginning search engine. It is a great place to start for ENL students.

Starfall has resources there for emergent and beginning readers.

Free resource for books K – 8 which is similar to Accelerated Reader

This website is a subscription website but has many free resources for leveled readers and may be something that would be of interest for the future.

National Geographic for Kids
Many magazine sites have children's versions that are written in more kid-friendly language such as Ranger Rick, Sports Illustrated for Kids, and more.


Web Sites for Beginning Readers

  • There are 3 levels at GameGoo. Explore the site to see where your student should begin.
  • Primary Games has more than just reading and language arts. It also has math, social studies, science, puzzles, and coloring activities.
  • Storyline Online is brought to you by the Screen Actors Guild and contains professionally created storybooks delivered over the Internet.
  • Seussville is a great, fun place to play and work with The Cat in the Hat!
  • Letter recognition and number recognition site. Also contains time activities for learning how to tell time. Good for T-1 and 1st grade.

  • The BBC has many unique and excellent quality activities for all levels, including pre-school. Pre-school children need few advertisements, if any, on the page. Advertisements distract and children tend to click what ever looks interesting not knowing that it might be an advertisement.
