United business class sleeper cabin (B767)
United business class sleeper cabin (B767)
United's new business seats (now on a handful of United international widebodies) are definitely an improvement over the previous business class seats, almost as comfortable as the first generation first suite. It's a bit lumpy when made into a bed, but at least it goes to 180 degrees, which for me is the difference between being able to sleep and not. The layout in the 767 configuration is a bit suboptimal. The middle column seat orientation is out of phase with respect to the side columns, so if you're in an aisle seat you're almost directly face-to-face with the person across the aisle from you when the seats are upright. It seems as if they could have created more of a perception of privacy at no cost in seat real estate by having all the seats in a row facing the same way. The window seats seem to be considerably more private, but unless you're a contortionist you'd be pretty well trapped if the aisle seat is lowered into a bed. Also, there's no storage space in any seat for takeoff / landing; everything has to go into an overhead bin. The new in-flight entertainment system is also nice; there are movies and audio programs on demand (you can pause or rewind), games, and a big touchscreen display. There's USB and 110VAC power at the seat, although my 110VAC didn't work. There's also an RJ45 ethernet jack; on my fight it was active, but did not serve DHCP.
