Founded in 1851, Miss Miner’s school became known under the following names: 1) Colored Girl’s school, 2) Miner Normal School, 3) Washington Normal School #2, 4) Miner Normal School (a second time), and 5) Miner Teachers College. The school was inactive for lack of funds between 1860 and 1871. Miner Normal School was created from an agreement made in 1877-1878 between the Commissioners of the District of Columbia and the trustees of the institution for the Commissioners of the District of Columbia and the trustees of the institution for the education of “colored youth”, by which Miner Teachers College might furnish yearly trained teachers for the public black schools In 1929, in response to longstanding demands for the upgrading of teacher training programs in the District, Congress voted to expand the Miner school into a four year degree granting institution known as Miner Teachers College. Miner Teachers College became an accredited teachers college in 1944.
