mid-century modern design in the fox valley Tour attendees at the Jacques Brownson house, Geneva, Illinois. October 10, 2009. The house, built 1949-1952 by the architect, Jacques Brownson forthis family, is framed with standard structural steel members. The 32 by 88 foot roof plate is suspended from four welded steel frames spanning 34 feet. All exterior and interior walls are non load bearing. Brownson was a student of Mies van der Rohe and received his Bachelor of Science in 1948 and his Master of Science in architecture in 1954 from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Clearly the Geneva House is close in design to the Farnsworth House in Plano, Illinois as well as Philip Johnson’s Glass House in New Canaan, Connecticut. The house, its design, construction, and HVAC systems were all discussed in Mr. Brownson’s paper submitted for partial fulfillment of his Master degree in 1954.
