Here are some causes of ACC:
  • Chromosome errors

  • Prenatal infections or injuries

  • Structural blockage by cysts or other brain abnormalities

Conditions associated with ACC:
 
  • Maternal nutritional deficiencies or infections
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
  • Orofacial abnormalities
  • Numerous additional congenital syndromes
Characteristics of ACC:
 
  • Vision impairments (near or far sightedness, nystagmus, strabismus, depth perception problems)
  • Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
  • Clumsiness/poor motor coordination
  • Delays in attaining motor milestones such as sitting, walking, riding a bike
  • Delayed toilet training
  • Low perception of pain
  • Chewing/swallowing difficulties
  • Abnormal head and facial features
  • seizures or spasticity
  • Early feeding difficulties/gastric reflux
  • Hearing impairments including hearing loss due to repeated ear infections
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Elimination problems including chronic constipation
  • Mental Retardation
  • Genito-urinary defects, cardiac anomalies, skeletal defects, matabolic disorders
Social Characteristics:
  • Generally happy disposition, enjoys being with others
  • socially immature
  • Lack of self awareness
  • Difficulties in maintaining attention
  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Fearfulness
  • Obsessive Compulsive behaviors
  • Inability to take the perspective of others
  • Difficulties understanding and acting on the social cues of others
  • Challenges with peer interactions and relationships that seem to increase with age and the complexity of the social situation
Communication Characteristics:
 
  • Early speech and language delays (like with expressive communication)
  • Misinterpretation of the nonverbal communication of others (facial expressions or tone of voice)
  • Difficulty understanding slang, sarcasm and jokes
  • Difficulty understanding others' perspectives and emotions
  • Difficulty understanding abstract language/ concepts
  • Difficulties with complex tasks, abstract reasoning, problem solving (managing money or schedules, responding to novel situations)
  • Confabulation (communicating information that is untrue while perceiving that it is true)
Ways to find out if you or someone you know has ACC:
 
  • Prenatal Ultrasound (the CC develops early in the womb.)
  • Prenatal MRI
  • CT Scan
  • MRI

ACC is not deadly. Its just something that the person has to live with for their whole life. It is said that it doesnt get better or worse but some days are good days while others are bad days. Some with ACC live normal lives while others have a very very difficult time of it. A person can go their whole life without knowing they have ACC...brain MRIs are the best way to go.
