Geosciences Information For Teachers (GIFT)
Web Site for Spanish teachers GIFT is an activity of the Committee on Education of the European Geoscience Union (EGU) open to all European primary and secondary science school teachers. In Catalunya, teachers´s participation is sponsored additionally by the project CataGIFT, funded by the Generalitat de Catalunya. Although this web page is meant for Spanish teachers, the chosen language is English because English is the official language of the GIFT workshops. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The European Geosciences Union (EGU) was founded in 2002 as a merger of the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG). EGU is a dynamic, innovative, and interdisciplinary learned association devoted to the promotion of The EGU´s Forum on Education, Outreach, News & Sponsorship is formed by 5 committees, among which the 'Education' and 'Outreach & Media' Committees. The Committee on Education organizes Geosciences Information for Teachers (GIFT) Workshops since 2003. WHAT IS THE GIFT WORKSHOP The GIFT Workshop is two-and-a-half-day teacher enhancement workshops held in conjunction with EGU’s annual General Assembly, generally in Vienna (Austria) in the month of April. Selected top-level scientists working in the field of Earth Science will offer the invited teachers talks centered on a different theme every year. Program, and presentations offered for each GIFT workshop are available in the EGU web page (see past GIFT themes). Beginning in 2009 selected conferences are available for Web streaming. The main objective of the GIFT workshops is to spread first-hand scientific information to science teachers of primary and secondary schools, significantly shortening the time between discovery and textbook, and to provide the teachers with material that can be directly transported to the classroom. In addition, the full immersion of science teachers in a truly scientific context (EGU General assemblies) and the direct contact with world leader geo-scientists are expected to stimulate curiosity towards scientific research that the teachers will transmit to their pupils. EXPENSES The EGU Committee on Education will cover the costs of travel to Vienna and Hotel rooms for selected teachers. WHO CAN APPLY Spanish primary and secondary school science teachers.
