THE LANCE

Baptized ALBERTO CLARITO ACAMPADO, he was nicknamed Abet since his childhood. By Senior High though he began using the nickname Lance at first without understanding why. The realization of the real meaning of Lance came when he was already a seminarian in the early 90s.

A lance is a spear. This weapon was used by Longinus (which name really connotes the weapon itself), a Roman centurion who was present during the crucifixion, in testing wether the Lord Jesus Christ was still alive so that his knee bones need not be broken anymore (which satisfies the prophecy that "No one of his bones shall be broken.")

Upon piercing the side of the Lord, blood and water gushed forth. Legend has it that Longinus, who was one-eyed, received a miracle at that time. His blind eye suddenly had vision. he could see.

Because of this he was converted to the Lord and because he refused to recant, he was beheaded. This story is told in the Moriones Festival of Marinduque.

Since the lance became an instrument of conversion, Lance hopes he could also be an instrument of the uplifting of the family to its original pedestal. A spear is a destructive weapon but it became an instrument of faith. Lance, on his part, though he is a sinner and prone to making mistakes, hopes he could also be able to become an instrument of change.

Says he, "We can make mistakes but we can change. And as we change we make a lot of difference!"
