The new 2009 programme

Here is the new practical programme that I am introducing to fit in with the new criteria to be examined in 2009.  Some of it is the same as the old programme but there are some brand new ones.    I will update these pages as the term progresses.

00 Introduction to datalogging

0 Introduction to uncertainties and graph plotting

1. Measuring acceleration

2. Measuring g

3. Projectiles

4. Force and acceleration

5. Specific heat capacity

6. The pendulum

7. Mass on an elastic string

The main differences with the new programme is that the criteria for assessment have been simplified.  This doesn't really effect the type of experiments that you do for the assessment  except that you must make sure you can assess the whole of a new criteria in the one experiment.

Example 1

With the old criteria you could assess planning (a) only in a practical.  So a students could simply write the research question, explain an hypothesis and select relevant variables for a complete in the Planning(a) criteria.  With the new criteria "Design", the student also has to describe their method to gain full marks.

Example 2

With the old criteria you could assess just data collection, now you have to assess data collection, processing and presentation all at the same time.  That means there is no point in giving students practicals to do that only involve data collection and not an acceptable level of processing (this usually means a graph).

The other big changes are that you now only assess personal skills with the Group 4 project and manipulative skills are calculated on the overall performance not the best two.

Finally there is now the requirement to use ICT in the lab work, no change here for me :-)
