You have probably heard or used one or all of these words used in reference to people with mental and physical disabilities.

Maybe they were used as insults. Maybe they were used to simply describe a person's condition. Whatever the use, these terms and others like them have a long, complex, and often cruel history. It is only in the past 50 years that people have begun to actively recognize the people behind the disabilities.

It is not desirable to be defined by what you cannot do. People like to be recognized for what they can achieve with their abilities, and those with physical and mental ailments are the same.

Here, you will be introduced to the Long History behind mental and physical disabilities, the Important Rights that Important People have fought for and gained, the many Abilities people have today, and how you can Get Involved and bring education and awareness to others.
