PHOTO GALLERY | The chapter on March 17 sponsored "A Layoff Survival Guide: How to Survive Shaky Times." With newsrooms downsizing, our panelists talked about how to prepare if you're concerned about losing your job, you've received a pink slip, or you just want to be ready for what's ahead. They also addressed what employers are looking for, journalism-related jobs and job searching in a tough market. More than two dozen people showed up, many wearing green in the spirit of St, Patrick's Day, for the professional-development workshop, which was held at The Honolulu Advertiser. Panelists included, from left: Steve Petranik, editor for Hawaii Business Magazine; Glenn Wakai, former television reporter, owner of High Impact Communications public relations company, and state legislator; Catherine Toth, journalism instructor at Kapiolani Community College; Gene Park, content specialist at HMSA; and Fernando Pizarro, content manager of customer relations at HMSA *** UNITY 2008 AAJA members Laurie Au and Wes Nakama attended presumptive Democratic Presidential Nominee Sen. Behind the scenes at PBS Hawaii. Robert Pennybacker of PBS, Kim Fassler, Laurie Au, Treena Shapiro, Richard Borreca, Shauna Goya, Stanley Lee and Dan Boylan (seated). The 2008 elections mark the first time either an African American or a woman will be their party's nominee for president. But is that really the news? Have domestic and international issues taken a backseat to gender and race? Do race and gender affect the way the media covers presidential candidates? AAJA Hawai‘i hosted a Political Panel, discussing such issues and ways the media can cover important election issues. The hourlong discussion was broadcasted live statewide on PBS Hawaii's Island Insights show. Panelists were political reporters Richard Borreca and Laurie Au of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, KITV's Denby Fawcett and Treena Shapiro of The Honolulu Advertiser. Dan Boylan served as moderator and host. Hawai‘i Republican Party chairman Willes Lee, Hawai‘i Democratic Party chairman Brian Schatz and KHON's Gina Mangieri provided additional video commentary. PBS Hawaii co-produced the show with AAJA members Au, Kim Fassler and Stanley Lee.
